iOS 14.2/14.3 battery drain bug!

Not sure you know anything about this, but my iPhone 8 battery randomly started to be really bad.

One day my battery was working great and randomly it’s draining battery at a super fast rate...

I didn’t download or change any settings. My settings are the best for battery saving...

I’m hoping it’s a weird software issue!

Know why this could be happening out of the blue?

UPDATE: I have since update to the iOS 14.3 RC/GM and my battery has been much better but the issue is still there not 100% fixed!

Hi!

Airplane mode does initially disable all connections (Wi-Fi, Cellular, Bluetooth) however all except Cellular can be separately re-enabled even if airplane mode stays active. Hence why I asked if your carrier supports Wi-Fi Calling.

Did you update to 14.4 already? Even though the drain bug on my device isn't gone, the overall battery performance though got better. And because I am connected to Wi-Fi 99.9% of the day, airplane mode with Wi-Fi calling works like a charm.

Being on airplane mode and completely offline (in case you do not have the Wi-Fi calling option) is not really a fix either, is it?

I only use and recommend airplane mode because Wi-Fi calling exists and is a possibility for many.

In any other instance, I advise you to plug in your phone however often you can until Apple hopefully fixes this, so you are not prematurely ruining you battery (if it drains entirely multiple times a day and you have to recharge it, it most definitely will put on many many cycles and makes it degrade even faster). But as you said, it is sitting on your desk most of the day waiting for a fix, it's alright ;) The battery draining like this (not only your device, but devices across the entire line-up) has to be a software bug which they should be able to patch up. Nobody knows what is taking them so long, and why they do not address this. It has made quite a bit of fuss already and they don't do anything. Maybe they are clueless as well, who knows

Adding my voice in the hope Apple might actually take notice and sort this issue out.

This has been going on for me since 13.7 – I had a great iPhone SE that has been all but useless since then. This latest update is the worst it has been... my phone was at 91% when I went to bed last night, I woke up to 33%. This has zero to do with indexing after an update. It has gone on for weeks after all of the previous updates. Open any app, and the battery percentage starts running down right in front of my eyes, literally like a stopwatch.

I'm so tired of patronizing Apple Expert advice about adjusting screen brightness, turning off background app refresh, yadda yadda. I've owned iphones since day 1 and have always taken those precautions to conserve battery life. I am not using my phone any differently. This is something Apple has done/is doing to phones to force obsolescence on them just like they did a few years ago. I will probably have to upgrade my phone, since a device that runs out of charge while doing absolutely nothing is of no practical use to me.

I have been a loyal iPhone user for years, but this is likely the last iPhone I will purchase.

Unfortunately low power mode made no difference. Phone shows 100% charged while plugged in; dies in m y hand the second after I unplug it. I am in chat right now with someone at Apple who is running a diagnostics check.

Thank the Maker I warned my son against updating to 14.3. Having it ruin my phone is bad enough but listening to a teenager whine about it would be infinitely worse.

Hey guys

I don't read all the others posts but I have the same issue with my iPhone 11 Pro since upgrading to iOS 14.3 from iOS 14.2.

With iOS 14.2 = Battery for over two days

With iOS 14.3 = Battery for one day max!

I tested it the last days and the battery is definetely very bad (this happens immediately after upgrading to 14.3). Something is wrong. The phone is not warm/hot, no unusual thing in the battery check and I don't use it more.

I have an iPhone SE (1st gen). Up until a few months ago, it was working just fine. By “fine” I mean I could get through the day on one charge. Ever since iOS 14 came out, the battery drain has been just abysmal. Even running the current iOS 14.3, the battery drops about 1% per minute, even if I’m not using the phone. I’m lucky if I can get to lunchtime with 20% battery left. I have to bring an external power bank to work, and usually have to plug the phone in twice over the course of the day. It’s also been taking longer to charge since the update. Ever since iOS 14, I’ve changed all the settings set to save battery. I’ve tried every reasonable hack I could find. The “Battery Health” says 84% but it says I don’t need to change it until it reaches 80%. I don’t want to switch to a new phone bc I’d rather wait for the iPhone 13.

Any solutions short of “buy a new phone” would be greatly appreciated. This phone works just fine aside from battery drain, and worked great before iOS 14. I don’t think the phone I itself is an issue.

I had the iPhone 6s and was having to charge the battery twice a day. I bought the iPhone SE 2020 and loved the battery life...until recently. I am back to recharging the phone twice a day. I am using Maps with display off most times and I may listen to podcasts. I tested the iPhone last night. I went to bed with the phone at 94%, all apps closed, and device connected to WiFi. When I awoke a few hours later, down to 83%.

This issue needs to be corrected ASAP

OK, thanks for doing that little experiment. I have nothing else to offer on this issue. As Rudy pointed out above, there may be small revisions to a particular model that may be the culprit. But since this issue isn't limited to just one or two or even three models, I don't think that is the answer either. But I'm at a loss to offer any further advice why millions of iPhones are working fine on 14.3, with a very tiny number having this problem.

Good luck working this one out.

Only had my iPhone 11plus max pro since September 2020 phone feels hot & battery drained with only 45mins use & was fully charged. I was sold a slower charging unit to help the battery but now it’s not doing it’s job! I always had android before & had no trouble!!! This myst be an Apple fault

Because half the time you never got the Android update, LOL. It takes anywhere from 3 months to a year for carriers to release an Android update (after Google releases it) for a particular model phone, and many models NEVER get the latest OS.

I am having the same issues too. Takes forever to charge and discharges as I blink.

I also noticed that it, 6s iphone, pushed data while it was just locked. I checked my data usage, had 3.75 gig left, then 2 days later, my carrier message that I reached 90% of my usage. And it was just a couple days in from billing cycle date, IMPOSSIBLE!!!!

please provide an update?
