I cant hear through my wired headphones on my MacBook Air

When I plug in my headphones I can't hear anything. When I go to settings it says the noise is playing through my External headphones. I have tried websites and apps for example Spotify, google classroom, and videos I have saved in my computer. I have attached a screen shot of when it says my wired headphones are being used but I can't hear anything. Does that make sense? How can I get wired headphones to work on my computer?
