Mail crashes when hitting Reply in M1 Mini

I'll check out what others are reporting re monitors in the morning. I posted on this about a month ago.

the problem only occurred when I selected the email in the sidebar and then selected reply to for it.

if I opened the email and then hit reply the app did not crash.

Update: 90 minutes later, after applying the 11.2 update, the crash when clicking "reply" has started again. Opening an email by double-clicking, then clicking reply still works without a crash. But what's the point of a preview pane?

After installing the Big Sur 11.2.1 update, the crash when clicking reply/forward while using a preview pane is not occurring...yet. But I experienced that after installing 11.2 and the crash returned soon after, so we'll see!

Really interesting twist. I too use dual monitors and have the Mail app on the monitor on my right (secondary).

However the past few days the issue has stopped occurring that much. Don't know why. When I place the Mail app on the main monitor I don't have problems. The one rare time it crashes however the mail app is on the secondary monitor.

After installing Big Sur 11.3, after a full day, Mail has not crashed on my secondary display (Mac Mini M1 with two external displays). Anyone else confirm 11.3 has fixed this nasty bug?

I haven't heard anything... There's no way they're unaware of the situation, though... at least I hope. It's very frustrating having to remember to double-click to open an email in a separate window before clicking reply. :(

I turned this feature off initially because I do not like having the menu bar on my second monitor. I have not tested activating "Displays have separate spaces" as it drives me nuts! If this does indeed fix it, then at least we/Apple know where to look for the bug.

Unfortunately, that web link provides no solution to his troublesome issue that has crippled my ability to simply reply or forward email using Mail. I teach online so this is a significant issue that occurred, went away (when I deleted some settings files) and just occurred again weeks later. I have a new M1 Mac Mini and all the updates as of this post. I really hope a fix is in the works.

No, they can’t because Apple Engineering is not here, only other users are.

You will know it’s fixed when the release notes for a future version of macOS says it is, or it stops being an issue in a future release.

Apple Engineering only very, very rarely discusses when an issue may be fixed.

I've had the same problem with my Mac not always recognising the external monitor if I disconnect it - it never seems to be resolved the same way twice. Last time it was only fixed when I unplugged the monitor end of the cable. There are known issues with M1 Mac and exernal monitors - I'm still waiting for an update to my display calibration software that works on an M1 Mac as I'm currently working with a 4 month old profile which I can't update…

Hmm. I have the M1 Mac Mini, so I have to use external displays (I have two Acer 24" monitors). They work flawlessly but the Apple Mail crash issue (when clicking reply/forward) continues to be an intermittent issue. Recently, it behaved for 2 solid days, but then yesterday it started crashing again. This morning, it is not crashing. I'm completely baffled. I wonder if it is something in the cloud that might be the issue?

I move Apple Mail around between my two monitors as the need arises. It doesn't appear to matter which screen it is on. I have the M1 Mac Mini. Both Acer monitors are identical, although 1 is connected via HDMI and the other is connected with a dongle (HDMI to Thunderbolt). I can never predict when the crash will occur. I can be replying to email normally, and when I click on the next one, it will crash.
