Don't know why I chose to turn it on. Now Time Machine won't backup "until my OS disk is encrypted". It is taking days (if it is doing something!) and I have no way to check how long it will last (Again.. if it is really encrypting it). I am the ADMIN and sole user of the computer... but Turn Off option is frayed out. Any idea?
I'm afraid that you have to wait for the encryption process to finish which may take a lot of time. Especially on slow hard drives. Be sure to keep the computer connected to power.

No. It's an iMac, at home. Often on all night.

That depends on the speed of the drive and the amount of data on the drive, it could take up to a couple of days.
And it's "TB," not "tb," the letter's case matters.
Also note that after it completes, if you decide to turn it off, it will take a similar amount of time to unencrypt your drive.
Are you on AC or battery power? You would need to be on AC power as the process would be suspended if you were on battery power.
