Where does Photos save images?

On an iMac, late 2015, Big Sur latest OS as of Dec 12, 2020, I edited an image in Photos on another app (Photoshop 2021) I saved a version right back to where it was on Photos. I have the exact address of it because I have a screen capture of the image with its address. And it's not there. It's not anywhere.

Where is this hiding?

This is the screen capture:

If you edit with Photoshop from Photos then save the file with a different name in the same location (within/inside) the Photos library it has no way of knowing there is a new/different file in there as it only logs it when imported.  It will only recognize and update the thumbnail of the file if the same has not changed by saving over the same file in Photoshop not creating a different version (additional file).

If you Edit in Photos and want to keep the original you can first duplicate the image within Photos then edit with in Photoshop and just hit Command-S to update that file and Photos will register the change (since it knows the file is there) and you should see the thumbnail change in photos when you view it larger.

Photos stores the images inside it's own library structure. If you edit an image from photos in an external app (eg photoshop), it will create a temporary copy for photoshop to edit, and then after editing, bring the edited version back into the library. With this workflow there is no way for photo shop to re-open that image, except to do it from photos via "edit with". But then you lose all edit history.

The alternative is to export the photo from photos to a folder, where you can edit it in photoshop, but then you won't have the version edited by photoshop within photos.

Furthermore you MUST NOT edit anything inside the photos library.photoslibrary package except with the photos app. No edits in photoshop, no manual moving or copying with finder, nothing. If you do you are risking damaging your library and losing access to your photos.

PS - nice picture by the way🙂

Thanks Tony,

I realize that Photos stores the images inside its own library structure. I even have the exact address from the screen capture that I did. The problem is that it is not there. Or anywhere.

I did rename the image in Photoshop so as not to confuse it with the original. That's the image in the screen shot along with its address. Are you saying that Photos will not do that? What explains that I have the image and its location in the screen shot?

Thanks again.
