M1 Mini issue with LG 27" 5K Monitor

I have a new M1 Mini running the LG 5K monitor from they Apple store. The monitor is recognized with the 5120 x 2880 resolution spec on boot or monitor reset (unplug and reinsert thunderbolt cable), but invariably falls back to a 3840 x 2160 resolution when the monitor goes into screen saver or sleep.

Three different thunderbolt cables have be used, a second LG Monitor tried, and have tried both Thunderbolt ports on the mini. A replacement Mac mini seems to be the last resort, but I feel this may be a bigger issue affecting others, and that a replacement will not fix this.

Is anyone running this monitor with Big Sur or ideally with the M1 Mini?

thoughts,

I called Apple Saturday and started a case. Talked to a senior tech person for a while. Went over everything. Told her about these threads in the forum. She had me set the energy saver to never. Thinking that this would push it to occur. The interesting thing is since changing it, it has never occurred. Makes me think that going into sleep may be what is causing it. WHY, I do not know.

I did see that there are 3 threads about this and on one someone mentioned they could make it happen by setting a hot corner to sleep monitor.

She also wanted me to try using the USB-C cable supplied by LG and see if it still happens. Have not tried that yet as I am seeing how long it will go without messing up by sleeping monitor being set to never.

I have the 34" model and had the same problem. I spent several hours troubleshooting with both Apple and LG, the end result of which was, a couple days later, an email from LG with a link to a beta of the LG Screen Manager app (I thought they had updated the version in the app store but apparently not; go to the LG US website and scroll through software and drivers for your model, you want to download the most recent mac version of "On Screen Control"). This mostly solved my problem, on occasion I have to unplug and plug back in the usb-c cable when waking from sleep (or my mini crashes in sleep), but at least it works correctly now. I suggest grabbing it from the app store; you don't need to do anything to it, just install it and reboot, and the monitor should default to 5k and Displays will now work correctly.

Also note I tested it with my M1 Air as well and same deal, a little under 4k and fuzzy text without the download, 5k and clear with.

Problem Solved! Here is your answer...Apple is currently promoting and selling a monitor that it full well knows is not compatible with Big Sur. The issue is NOT the Apple Silicon - the issue is Big Sur and LG's incompetence. The current firmware for this monitor is not compatible with Big Sur, the LG Display Manager App is not functioning in Big Sur. LG releases a firmware update in January that it had to roll back because it made the distortion issue worse. Apple blames LG and LG blames Apple. Regardless - Apple still promotes and sells this monitor directly to consumers knowing full well that these issues exists without making any disclaimer. The solution?

1. Stick it out and hope it gets fixed. When you experience the distortion simply unplug the thunderbolt or USB C from the back of the monitor and plug it back in.

2. Return the monitor and get an alternative brand NOT from LG.

LG: The kind and clearly knowledgable support rep told me that they have been aware of compatibility issues ever since Big Sur was released. An OS Big Sur upgrade fixed some issues that prevented users from using all available resolution settings and some other stuff. The issue with the pixel shift has not been fixed. I was told they attempted to do so with a firmware update in January but it proved to make things worse - whatever that meant. When I asked why the LG Display Manager on the App Store hasn't been updated in a year and is not compatible either and can't recognize connected Displays, I was told the following: He said the app not working is a combination of Big Sur and Rosetta 2. There are no immediate plans to upgrade it. A different App called LG Onscreen Manager (not on the App Store but available on the LG site) also does not work for the same reasons despite being a replacement for the Display manager. And, I was told that LG of course stays in the business of making displays but will not make any more MAC specific displays and will discontinue the Ultrafine 5 K model. As to your last point - yeah in my 15 years of dealing with Apple I encountered that while their support staff is usually super nice - they are either told to deny any issues or are just not being informed of them and thus make you waste your time jumping through hoops that do nada for you. Oh well...watcha gonna do? Switch to Windows? I'd rather get my old typewrite out than that.

FYI, I moved my mini and switched from the short apple thunderbolt 3 cable to the long one that came with the LG monitor, and it would not wake the monitor, even though I could see by my external drives that the Mac mini was awake.

I purchased the awfully expensive (longer) apple pro thunderbolt 3 cable, and I've never had the issue with the monitor waking using a longer cable..

That said, I had used the thunderbolt cable that came with my first LG monitor, and I had no issues with the monitor waking, and it is approximately the same length as my Apple pro thunderbolt cable. The second monitor and cable had the issues waking.

The Pro cable is made very well and securely latches to the mini and the monitor, but the price is terrible.

Thank you for your response.

Have you updated Big Sur to 11.1. While I have no internal display, I was having issues with the recognized resolution and the display preferences for my LG monitor changing upon waking. The update fixed all of those issues, just not the "vertical pixel shift" in the thread.

Do you think the connected 5K display is contributing to the issue with the internal display? Do you have the issue with the internal display without the 5k monitor connected?

Good Morning digitalsr2,

I received my replacement M1 Mini, and the issue with pixel shift continued after migrating from Time Machine. I had a number of issues with the time machine migration and did a clean install of Big Sur and didn't migrate data since most it was in iCloud. I also upgraded to Big Sur 11.2 during the clean install of the OS, and so far I've not seen the pixel shift issue and want to attribute it Big Sur 11.2 if the issue is indeed gone.

Have you upgraded to 11.2, and if so, did it address your pixel shift issues? I'll let you know if the issue continues in this new configuration.

Regards,

Jon

The timing of my call and being within the return window likely helped me, along with getting to a senior advisor on the call. I contacted Apple right away when I noticed the issue, and they opened a case re the problem. At the time, three things were going on -- the pixel shift, blurry text and the monitor dropping back from 5K to 4K. I effectively had tried everything (software updates, restarts, different cables and ports) the Level 1 support agent would ask me to do, so I was able to get to a senior advisor during the call.

I told them I wanted to avoid sending anything back if I can avoid it, so the case was left open and got assigned to the next level of support for more advanced diagnostics. Apple was now contacting me to resolve the issue, and I have been working with the same technician for several weeks. I've run a number of different diagnostics routines at their direction and even sent a video shot from my phone showing the pixel shift. The blurry text and falling back to 4K were resolved with Big Sur 11.1 update. Since the pixel shift its still present after the update, they initiated a replacement that I am waiting to ship.

If you are correct with it being an architecture issue, the replacement Mini won't by itself resolve the pixel shift issue. I'm at the point though that I'll have to live with it and hope that it will be fixed with a firmware or software update.

Best of luck.

Chris, I recommend living with hot corner fix and setup a trouble ticket, if you haven't already done so and leave it open. I am expecting a Mini replacement in about three weeks, so I'll let you know if that fixes anything. I expect the problem with the pixel shift to continue until Apple releases another update.

Under Big Sur 11.0 that was installed on the M1 Mini, the monitor would initially be seen at 5K and invariably fall back to 4K (3840 x 2160) when waking from sleep. Big Sur 11.1 fixed this, so the pixel shift is the only annoyance now, and I expect a future software update to fix this.

Had an 27" Apple Silicon iMac been available, I would have made that purchase. What I have is the closest I can get to it, and overall I'm very satisfied.

Hang in there

Hi reportaman, I simply contacted LG support for consumer electronics (https://www.lg.com/us/support/telephone). It was good fortune that I got someone on the first call that actually listened, didn't need a troubleshooting script, and had some meaningful suggestions for troubleshooting that could isolate whether it was a monitor or video source issue. I identified him as a tech, as it was clear he knew more than the average support person you typically receive when you first calling in. I'm convinced the problem is within the M1 architecture after having the exact same problem and symptoms with two new monitors, and hearing others having the same problem with the M1. Regarding Apple, I went to their support page https://getsupport.apple.com and navigated through to eventually arrange a callback. I then continued to pursue a resolution with that initial case even after I got an authorization to return the complete order (Mini and Monitor) for refund.

Yes, I am referring to the pixel shift. And thanks the hot corner solution seems to do it and is a bit less hassle than unplugging the cable - merci! I was on the phone with LG support several times (not a good company btw) and finally got someone on the phone who was actually super knowledgable on this issue and told me what the issue is. BTW - LG seems to not plan on rolling out a new firmware to address this and I was told they are actually discontinuing this particular model. In any case, Apple does actively promote this monitor and it is the only 3rd party display you can buy directly from Apple. In addition, when you call Apple support to address this issue they all claim to have never heard of this problem and make you waste an enormous amount of time by doing non-sense like starting in recovery mode, reinstalling Mac OS, swapping your thunderbolt cable etc. The right thing to do would be to either stop selling it or at least make a disclaimer. But instead we see another example of a pattern of denial, fingerprinting and no attempt to protect their customers from financial harm by selling a product Apple knows has issues. Yeah maybe they keep it on the shelves till they come out with their own consumer level priced monitor and just want to get rid of their inventory - just leaves a bitter taste in my mouth.

In the meantime LG updated the LG Screen Manager (App-Store), so it is working on M1-Machines. But up until now I don't see a firmware-update which fixes the problem. May be later?

My experience is: The problem still exists, but after the change of settings to never to shut of monitor after 3 hrs - or never it almost doesn't happen too much. If it does I quickly use a hot corner to go into sleep mode and awake it again. Then for this time it is fixed. I can live with it.
