Where is software update?

I cannot update my macbook air. There is not a "software update" button in my system preferences. My system is running on OS X and has not been updated in a long time.

MacBook Air 13″, OS X 10.11

Two Important Streps to Upgrading: Back Up, then Upgrade

A. Important: Back Up First:

Always be certain you backup prior to Installation, create a Time Machine Backup, that way, you can have something to restore your Mac from, should anything go wrong with the upgrade. Use an external hard drive that is at least 1.5 the total storage capacity as that of your internal hard drive.

B. Perform the Upgrade:

I. Discover the year of your Mac:

To find out:

  1. Go To: Apple menu
  2. Select: About this Mac
  3. View: First Line-Down

II. Discover its Compatibility:

  1. Go Here: How to Get Old Versions of macOS - Apple Support
  2. Scroll To: Check compatibility
  3. Click: The macOS name, seeing if our can install it fro, El Captain

III. Try the Upgrade:

Important: Use Safari to download this, not FireFox or Chrome.

  1. Go Here: How to Get Old Versions of macOS - Apple Support
  2. Scroll To: Download macOS
  3. Download: the most recent version
