Language switching stops working using globe button button on MBP M1

When I launch my MBP M1 language switching using fn button works normally, but in some time after launch this feature stops working, and I should reset my MBP to use this feature.

(fn button works, but it doesn't switch languages)

How can I solve this issue?

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 11.0

I recently found that in the Keyboard -> Shortcut settings on my new MacBook Pro there is a shortcut override in "Input Sources" and "Spotlight".

After disabling Control + Space shortcut in the Keyboard -> Shortcut -> Spotlight section language switching button started work again.

This "feature" with "Fn" button switch language mode often starts after closing-open MacBook M1:

FIX this:

Option 1:

Open terminal -> kill TextInputSwitcher

Close terminal

Tap by mouse cursor on language menu (top right corner), and change language few times. After "Fn" button will start work again automatically.

Option 2:

Open terminal -> kill TextInputSwitcher

then

cd

/System/Library/CoreServices/TextInputSwitcher.app/Contents/MacOS/

and

./TextInputSwitcher

After answers form users about fixing this "feature" by terminal: sounds good, but difficult.

OPTION 3:

1) Open activity monitor window (command + space: activity monitor.app)

2) Find process: TextInputSwitcher (in memory tab(it's second tab. First tab: CPU); or tap in search field: TextInputSwitcher)

3) Stop process TextInputSwitcher (Click the Stop button  in the upper-left corner of the Activity Monitor window: Force stop)

4) Close activity monitor (command + Q)

After: Tap by mouse cursor on language menu (top right corner), and change languages few times. After "Fn" button will start work again automatically.

P.S. Sorry, I haven't permissions to fix it with a macOS update. I'm not Steve Wozniak. Good luck.

hey, i had the same problem and apple should solve it on next macOS updates BUT i found a way to make fn/globe work without restart and a shortcut that changes languages without setting a shortcut by yourself.

.

So there is the way :

use control + option + space and you'll see the language changes and if you try fn/globe key after that you'll see it works.

I’m not sure what was the connection, since I upgraded to Big Sur 11.2.1 or 11.2.2 in Feb 2021, the problem went away. However, it seems to be connected to the application WhatsApp, as such issue usually came back after I switched the language while sending messages. Since I uninstalled WhatsApp (decided to quit for privacy concerns), I haven’t experienced the language switch issue connect to the globe/fn key. So it’s worth to assess whether most of us here have similar pattern connecting to WhatsApp.

It was frustrating honestly, it only works for a few minutes after a reboot.

However, my MBP M1 starts to work normally after updating to macOS11.2, the 🌐 key now can switch input sources normally. It’s been working without the old ghosting/non-responsive problem for 2 days now. So the problem may be linked to something else. Maybe try to reset all the system settings? But Apple should have the answer.

Good luck!

I'm facing the same issue. The globe/fn button stops changing languages. The fn button works in every other ways, it just stops switching languages when pressed once. I don't know what causes it. It happens randomly during normal usage of the laptop.

There is second default keyboard shortcut for language switching: control+space. This command works. And after I use this command, the fn button starts working again.
