Language switching stops working using globe button button on MBP M1

I have the same problem.

Fn/globe key stops working.

Option+Shift+Space doesn't work, either.

Setting "hold Caps Lock" to change language doesn't help, either.

Submitted feedback to Apple via links above, make sure you all do the same.

Apple doesn't use that, it's Control Space. You turn it on and set it to what you want in system preferences/keyboard/shortcuts

That only works between Latin and non-Latin keyboards, like between English and Chinese.

Hey, you do not need to restart, by default input sources can also be switched with (⌃+ Space) or (⌃+ ⌥ +Space) shortcuts.

If input sources switching stopped working with the "globe" key - use on of this shortcuts, and then try the "globe" key again.

Weird, agree. Hope apple will fix this annoying bug.

I have the same problem. But you don't need to reboot. You can logout and login and it works again. (or you can restart the service as mentioned previously).

Strangely, after installing google Japanese input (so I have U.S., Hiragana and Hiragana (Google)), I haven't seen the problem.

I have the same problem (MBP M1 with globe key).

Quick workaround. Open terminal and execute:

kill -9 $(ps aux | grep TextInputSwitcher | grep -v grep | awk '{print($2)}') && /System/Library/CoreServices/TextInputSwitcher.app/Contents/MacOS/TextInputSwitcher &

This command restarts TextInputSwitcher which is responsible for the language switching with fn key. It helped me to make the fn key alive again without restarting MacBook. But it’s a temporary workaround.

Hello from Greece. I have exactly the same issue with the language button. After some time it stops working and the only way to fix it is to restart MBP. Did you find any solution? I sent it as an issue to  support btw.

Have same issue. Language switch stop working until reset. Another bug i noticed - when scroll between virtual desktops - language panel at the center of the screen appears for a while and disappears. Let us know if you found solution.

Tried DmitryF solution but it don't work for me. 

UPD: launchctl kickstart -k gui/501/com.apple.TextInputSwitcher works!

I have exactly the same problem on THREE different M1 devices: a MacBook Pro M1 and the same bug with 2 different Macbooks Air which one of them I had to bring back after the Apple support couldn't help me anymore with various problems such as no bluetooth connection on one side, an uneven aluminum case that let the device wobble while writing on it and the worst, after updating the whole system and later erasing the SSD and installing Big Sur together with the Apple support, it wouldn't let me create a user account (for the second time on a MacBook Air, I had already two bad devices with this error)...

Thank you very much for this alternative, I am using three different keyboards every day. However, the world key at the bottom left should should actually work but unfortunately it doesn't. The latest update to 11.2 didn't help either.

The latest update to 11.2 didn't help either. The world key just stop working after a while. I am using different desktops for about a few hours until the key just stops working. Dude, this is the very first time I am experiencing a "dead" key that supposed to work. This is my fourth Macbook, two MacBook Air had other serious problems, the third Air and my Pro have still way too many bugs. The good side though is the battery life. However @Apple This is a very bad user experience!!!

It is a bit unfortunate that they key sometimes fails to work (and surprising since 11.2 was supposed to fix it), but fortunately there are easy alternatives. My mac doesn't even have the "world" key and Control-Shift-Space is not very hard to use...

@Luis the control-shift-space combination isn't really an option for me. I'd prefer to just use one single button rather than hitting three at the same time. Let's see if they will fix the issue some day, I am sure there is a long list this time

The "world" on the key doesn't matter, as long as you are running Big Sur, the Fn key can be used to switch keyboards, at least for a while...

I have noticed the same issue with MBP M1. It only starts to work again if I restart the macOS, but it stops working again after using any apps for a couple of minutes, as I tested a few times on purpose, quite annoying.

I believe the macOS 11.2 update includes the fix for this issue, which is listed as "Globe key may not display the Emoji & Symbols pane when pressed". When the input source is only the default language, the global key calls out the Emoji & Symbols. So I think this is the same source of the issue.
