Can Ram be tested if the Mac doesn't boot? Sounds like a funny joke, but please read on....

Hi,

I have been on a very frustrating journey trying to install ram from Other World Computing. They are great if you can reach them, but it's been since Thanksgiving since I first called them. 3 weeks later and I am at half the ram I started with. Story in my other topic/ posts. It seems I can only get one apple installed chip working, but if I add another chip from apple it doesn't boot or I don't hear any beeps. Could be the way I installed it, but after a successful boot and leaving the working apple ram chip untouched I can't determine if I installed the other one incorrectly or it's a bad slot or ram chip.

I would like to be able to determine if my attempts at trying to install the new ram has damaged the slot or even one of the apple installed chips. Does anybody have any ideas short of bringing it in? My three year apple warranty just ran out in November, but I doubt it would be covered. Plus, don't want to go in for a fix due to the pandemic.

Thanks

Thanks Babowa, It seems I need to delay this because the only vacuum we have is one that doesn't have a nozzle, so I need to borrow one. It might be a good thing though. I have some things I need to do today for work. If I mess it up then my work will be done! I am currently working on an 8gb. apple chip. I might just need to get some canned air and wait for it! It seems that I could order it, but it won't be here until the 28th. though. OWC says I have until a few days into January. I am determined to try those chips again if we find out that some of the pins aren't bent. I may have voided the warranty, because I tore off the label on it, by my many attempts. When I email OWC I mention it, but don't get an answer. I think they're being real careful not to say anything that won't hurt them legally. I know you mentioned a well thought out business letter, but I need to regroup. Their is a lot to my story that I feel I should include and then I think it would be too much! I'll keep you and the rest of this board posted.

Hi 6X6, Thank You for your advice. I believe you're right, but because I tried so many times I may have bent some of the pins. I had apple install a 2nd 8gb chip to make it 16 when I bought it. The only one that seems to work now is that slot with the 8gb. chip. When I can get the right vacuum I will clean the lint and dust so it can be determined that my slot pins are bent or not. I appreciate your help.

Thanks Babowa, I think I could keep my letter to one page. I just replied to their last canned "Team" emails from Friday. I told them that I was forced to go on this board and their are over 4,000 view and a handful of people who are offering advice. I also asked for a supervisor, so let's see what happens. They open on Monday! Thanks.

I would most certainly not use compressed air in this situation. You would basically blow dust/residues into the computer (instead of out) which may lead to other undesired consequences.

I would use instead a vacuum cleaner with a crevice attachment. They come pretty much stand with any domestic vacuum cleaners. Also, make sure that the tip of the attachment is clean.

Thank You! Thank Goodness that I was able to buy some compressed air locally. I checked around and the little bottles weren't available. I know I should keep the can in the upright position, but should I stand the mac up when I'm doing it and should I take the working chip out of it's slot? I probably should, but please confirm it. I am most likely going to do this tomorrow night due to job responsibilities. One more thing. HWTech said their might be a black dot. If so, what does that mean? Thanks ALL for your help!

Thanks so much HWTech! Yes, I am alone so it will be face down. I will try to arrange for as much lighting as I possibly could get. I'm in a small space so it might be difficult, but I have some ideas. Like I had mentioned. I will try it tomorrow night. This way I will have somewhat of a break from when I need my mac incase something goes wrong. I'm also going to double check I bought the right compressed air also. Thanks again!

Hi HWTech, Sounds like a dumb question, but I understand that any kind of liquid could be bad, but if I have the mac on a table, the can in the upright position, but direct the straw downwards that's good right? Or, I guess I could put the mac close to the end of the table so the can is upright and the straw is straight, right? So sorry for all this! Don't want to lose what I already have, but really want to fix the entire ram thing. Thanks
