Can Ram be tested if the Mac doesn't boot? Sounds like a funny joke, but please read on....

Hi,

I have been on a very frustrating journey trying to install ram from Other World Computing. They are great if you can reach them, but it's been since Thanksgiving since I first called them. 3 weeks later and I am at half the ram I started with. Story in my other topic/ posts. It seems I can only get one apple installed chip working, but if I add another chip from apple it doesn't boot or I don't hear any beeps. Could be the way I installed it, but after a successful boot and leaving the working apple ram chip untouched I can't determine if I installed the other one incorrectly or it's a bad slot or ram chip.

I would like to be able to determine if my attempts at trying to install the new ram has damaged the slot or even one of the apple installed chips. Does anybody have any ideas short of bringing it in? My three year apple warranty just ran out in November, but I doubt it would be covered. Plus, don't want to go in for a fix due to the pandemic.

Thanks

You need to verify each stick of RAM works by itself and you need to verify each memory slot works by testing just a single stick of RAM.

Then you need to verify the two original Apple modules work as a pair.

Then remove the Apple modules and try the two new OWC modules as a pair.

Then add in the original Apple modules.

Make sure the memory is installed in the correct slots when installing the pairs. I think you need to install the first two modules into the "DIMM 0" slots and the second pair into the "DIMM 1" slots. See if the "memory" section of "About This Mac" has any recommendations on the installation in case I'm wrong about these slots.

Sometimes mixing different brands of RAM just doesn't work. Memory can be tricky sometimes.

Just try to document things and keep things straight which can be hard to do sometimes.

HW Tech, I haven't been able to try anything, but I went to the Mr. Memory website. It breaks it down in terms of processor gb. I just learned of this. I thought it was the basic stuff 27 inch...2017. I wonder if this is the problem? I remember checking and double checking with OWC sales people and and was never asked about the processor speed. The seemingly knowledgable tech didn't ask me that information in verifying if I had the right ram either.

Currently I am still unhappy. Yesterday the third person has asked me to confirm my phone number to call me with no call. The other option was to call them. I wrote back and asked for someone's extension so that I wouldn't have to wait over an hour to talk to someone. Is this too much to ask of Other World Computing? I will go through the process of charging my credit card so they can send new ones to me until they get theirs back, but so many more delays! 4 chips is expensive for me. Not sure why their service is so bad! I would think my case has escalated to a higher person in the chain of command., but instead I get a new person with the same response.

Well, I might try some things tonight to get one of the original apple chips back, so I could at least go back to where I started from , but it is very draining. 16gb. is better than 8gb.

Thanks

Hi HWtech,

Well I talked with chat a few days ago and she couldn't tell me what I ordered by the serial number. You are telling me some things I will look into. However, the point I am at now is I'm trying to get the other 8gb chip from apple to work with the other one that they installed that works. They both worked and now one isn't working. This is what is very frustrating. I was at that point with the working chip that didn't work after install and was real tired. I reseated it, left it unplugged overnight and it worked the next day. It was either I had done something wrong with seating or the mac needed to rest overnight. I don't think it was the way I seated it, but it might have been. If I get it working again I might just try the OWC chips in the same manner. Either all 4 or 2 at a time before I go to bed.

I will be the first one to admit that it might be something that I'm doing wrong if they are sure they sent me the right ones, but it could be the chips and I wouldn't know it as they are very little help.

I must tell you I am worried about possibly losing the warranty. I have difficulty with my hands and in my many attempts the serial number started to tear, so I took it off not realizing it would void the warranty. LOL. I was assured by one of their techs that I wouldn't be charged, but it appears the right hand doesn't know what the left is doing. I was hoping if I explained that I did this by accident the person would give me a break, but it looks like I will need to pay for them!

Well, the good thing is I got my i5 going to do things on. I can be a bit more patient with my i7 if it is down for an evening like it is tonight. I've had a few of those! Tomorrow is a new day. I will get a fresh start! I hope I can at least determine the apple chips and the slots are working properly until this gets resolved. I'll keep you posted!

Thanks
