Migration Assistant taking a very long time to get started

I’m using Migration Assistant to restore from a Time Machine backup. I’ve jumped through every hoop and am at the point where the program says it is “Preparing to transfer user documents…” There is a progress bar that hasn’t moved a pixel in over 20 minutes.

is this to be expected?

There is no indication on the screen that any progress is being made. How can we tell if migration is actually happening or if the Migration Assistant app is stuck? There is no percent complete or any estimate of time remaining and no movement of the blue bar. Please don’t reply to this question as if everything is normal and the only variable is the amount of MB being transferred. Is this software designed to not give any progress reporting while the migration is underway?

Hi Scott F,

We understand you have some questions about moving data to a new computer. We're happy to help.

The time it takes to complete a data transfer will greatly vary on the amount of data you're migrating, and the connection type you're using. A migration can take anywhere from minutes to hours to progress.

You can find more info on using Migration Assistant to move data from an old Mac to a new one here: Move your content to a new Mac

We hope this helps. Cheers!
