Screenshot App not working with Big Sur

Since I've upgraded to Mac OS Big Sur, when I use the screenshot app to capture a section of my screen, it will take the first screen shot, but then the screen stays dark except for the area where I took the screenshot.

Using the esc key doesn't work to get rid of the dark screen. I have to restart the computer to get rid of the screen shot.

How do I get the Screenshot App to work in Big Sur? Or do I have to upgrade the Screenshot App?

MacBook Air 13″, macOS 11.0

I noticed something that sounds similar. I had started a screen recording instead of a screen capture. Make sure you are using the screen capture button and not screen recording.
