Screenshot "Open in Preview" Opens Preview's Open File Window

I'm using Big Sur 11.6 on a 2018 MacBook Pro. Up until recently, when I'd take a screenshot, I could right-click the quick thumbnail to get a menu and select Open in Preview, which would then open the image in Preview. For the past weeks or month or so, when I choose Open in Preview, Preview launches its Open File menu, instead of opening the screenshot.

If I hit cancel, the open window goes away but my screenshot does not open. I have to repeat the process, and on the second attempt, when I cancel the Open File window, my screenshot will open.

Not the biggest problem in the world, but is a wrinkly in my workflow at times. Any ideas? Is this an issue that carried over to Monterey?

This is a known bug.

The workaround is to open Preview in advance.

As long as Preview is already running, everything will work, and your screenshot will open in Preview as intended.

This bug was fixed in Monterey.

It's kind of funny. That is what I usually tell people here, every day.

No, I would never install these kinds of things, and I know and tell people every day not to install them.

I did experience it in Big Sur 11.6 and 11.6.1. I have been running Monterey since it came out and no longer have this problem, but it was something that was the subject of a few threads a while back.

I did do a clean install of Monterey, and only migrated the user accounts. Although I had very little and only respectable third party modifications, there is a chance that something I did have was related to the problem, though I can't fathom what that might have been; and I did test extensively at the time.

Wait!....

I just went looking for these old threads and I noticed something that was mentioned there:

Make sure that Preview is not set to open something from iCloud, by default.

This seems to have helped some people.

I have screenshots on my Desktop. I can right-click any of these and select Open With > Preview (default), and it opens the image in a Preview window. I can use Quick Look on an image and when I click Open in Preview, it does. Double-clicks of these screenshots behave the same way.

At no time can I reproduce your scenario of a file chooser from Preview, even when I select it in iCloud Drive > Options… > Preview.

Luis,

sorry to tell you that it is not a known bug in 11.6.1 on my MBP 13" Early 2015. I can open a screenshot directly in Preview even when Preview is not running with the right option set, and the sequence described rightclicking the the temporary thumbnail and selecting Preview also starts and opens Preview with the screenshot. So something else must be wrong in your system.

Any optimizers, cleaners or virus scanners running ?
