Hi, I have the iPhone 12 and live in the UK and in March I hope to be in Thailand. And so I would like to know if my phone will work as normal if I put a Thailand SIM card in that only has a data allowance on it. I know that the phone is able to make WiFi calls and so I would like to be able to do that when I am there as my normal provider will charge an arm and a leg. I do not need to make lots of calls but I need to be able to be connected.

If you get a data only SIM, it will not allow phone calls, unless you use an IP calling app, such as Skype, but that will not use your phone number. If you wish to prevent charges to your UK carrier, you would need to use a Thailand SIM, but it would have to be a phone SIM, not just a data SIM, and you would use the Thai phone number. While you can make wi-fi calls with your UK SIM, you would have to find out if the Thai carrier supports wi-fi calls.
Yes that is what I thought and I shall try and find out if the WiFi calling will work on the data sim as the phone uses it with out any problem .
Hi, my phone is fully unlocked and I purchased it in England. The main reason that I am asking about this is when we last went to Thailand we stopped of in Doha, and I did not have an iPhone at the time so as soon as I turned my phone on it connected to the local net work ,and when we got home I had been charged £20.00 just for turning it on. So if I put a Thailand sim in to the phone which is just for 4/5G will calls to my number still work.
Where did you buy the phone? In the US, only Apple stores sell fully unlocked phones.
If your phone is fully unlocked, it should work OK in Thailand. You may not get LTE service, but you'll be able to make calls/send texts.
