Memoji not working: New iPhone 12 pro

I bought a new iPhone 12 pro and tried to use the Memoji animation in my messages but there is no record button and it tells me to bring my face into view and never picks up my face. What am I doing wrong?

Update: I created my personal Memoji and after completing, all the other Memoji animals started working.
