Can Apple Fitness be used on a Roku TV by using the Apple TV App?

Can the new Apple Fitness + App be used on a new Roku TV through the Apple TV app? We have new Apple Watches (series 5 & 6) but not the Apple streaming box.

Apple Fitness+ - Apple

Apple Fitness+ requires Apple Watch Series 3 or later with watchOS 7.2 or later and one of the following Apple devices: iPhone 6s or later with iOS 14.3 or later, iPad with iPadOS 14.3 or later, or Apple TV with tvOS 14.3 or later.¹

Apple Fitness+ does not work with the Apple TV app. It requires a separate app/its own app.

Nope! Unfortunately Fitness+ does not support Airplay. I found out the hard way having bought a newer Roku. There are separate threads on this as to whether the issue is 1)An Apple bug or 2)Apple trying to force people into buying an Apple TV box. Hopefully the former.

At present, the Airplay may show the preview to a workout but anything more than that and it's just a black screen with audio.

Just tested this on my Roku via AirPlay. I’m using my iPhone 11 Pro. AirPlay is connected to my Roku TV. The Preview Apple Fitness videos play as you would expect, both video and sound play on my Roku TV, but when you play the main video, the video only displays on my iPhone (or iPad) and the sound plays on my Roku TV. When you open the main fitness video, the only option for the Airplay setting is the current device’s display, it won’t display my other AirPlay TV’s in the house as options. This appears to be an Apple Fitness + issue. All of my other videos ie Netflix, play as expected on my Roku TV. Apple Support, can you further comment? This issue fairly easy to reproduce.

I can see the Fitness+ previews, but get only a black screen and sound when I try to stream from: Roku with Air Play, HDMI cable (thunderbolt to HDMI), or AppleTV3.

It's not a good time to upgrade to AppleTV HD/4K with likely release of new AppleTV soon.

Apple bait and switch with Fitness+, for those of us who want it on the big screen and don't have current AppleTV HD/4K.

Not a great UX. Left with the iPad mini screen as my best option.

Yes, same experience here, it is very disappointing that it is not possible to cast fitness+ videos to the RokuTV. Especially with the preview video actually working, giving the deceitful impression that Fitness+ will work with screen mirroring on a big screen.

Roku has 50million subscribers in the US, Apple is leveraging that market to sell their AppleTV content in that market, but still block screen mirroring with fitness+ to force AppleTV hardware sales! (Only solution to get fitness+ videos on a big screen).

i guess I will stick with Peloton on RokuTV.

I am extremely disappointed in Apple to find out that the Fitness+ app is not able to be airplayed through the Roku to TV.....Apple can make excuses however they want to claim it is made “clear” the fitness app doesn’t work with such a setup but to allow the preview videos to work and display to the TV but not the actual workout videos is ridiculous! I really hope that Apple does something and fixes this issue QUICKLY. If not, I know I will definitely not be keeping the fitness+ subscription....

Consistent with everyone’s experience. I talked to support in the US yesterday and was eventually put through to someone more senior. Their position was that the website is clear on which products will work with Fitness+ but sympathised with the issue. I was told to go via the feedback page to register the issue, which I’ve done and included a link to this thread.

They’ll have had many such pieces of ‘feedback’ on this new product and there will be more pressure/cancelling of Fitness+ subscriptions if they don’t fix it.
