Portrait mode camera won't load x1 mode

If I open my camera app and swipe onto the portrait mode it by default is showing x2.

If I tap on the x2 in the bottom left corner to take it into x1, then the camera blurs and never comes back on again. The green light at the top of my phone also switches off (indicating the camera is no longer active), and if music is playing it will stop.

The x1 view works in all other camera modes, it's only the portrait mode where it doesn't work.

I've reset my phone but still no luck.

I assume this is a software issue rather than a fault with my phone specifically?

Does anyone have a solution to fix this?

Hello again AlexAmos1,

The next thing we recommend doing is restoring your iPhone using a computer. This is different from the reset you did from the Settings app since it reinstalls the iOS rather than only erasing your data. Since this restore still erases everything, you'll want to make sure you have a recent backup: How to back up your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch.

To complete the restore follow these steps: Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to factory settings. After your iPhone is restored you will be given options to then restore all of your data from a backup. Choose not to restore the data for now and set up your iPhone like new. Once it's set up test out your Camera app. Testing it without your backup helps determine if this is a software or hardware issue. Restore your backup after testing it out, and then test out Camera once more: Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch from a backup.

If you didn't experience the same thing when testing your iPhone after it was set up as new, but then did once you restored your backup, it's possible your backup may be corrupted. If you experienced the same thing with your iPhone set up as new without your backup, the next best step would be to have your iPhone serviced. Service options vary depending on your location. You can bring your iPhone to either an Apple Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider, and one can be located here: Find Locations. Hi,

I’ve tried all of the solutions you’ve suggested.

The first type of reset I tried was just turning the phone off, leaving it for a while and then turning on again.

When that didn’t work I completely reset the iPhone (via settings - general).

Attached a screenshot of what I see when I try to move into the x1 portrait mode. It keeps the view from the x2 and blurs it as if it will refocus once it has switched cameras but then never changes from this.

Hello AlexAmos1,

It sounds like you've been experiencing some issues with camera settings on your iPhone. We'd like to help you get this resolved.

If you haven't done so already, restart your iPhone: Restart your iPhone. This is a simple step that can solve a lot of different issues. Next, make sure you're running the latest iOS version: Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. Keeping your iPhone updated will ensure it gets the bug fixes and improvements it needs so that it runs its absolute best.

Respond back if you continue to experience the same issue. Also, let us know which type of reset you did (i.e., powering off and back on, restoring in iTunes, resetting all content and settings via the Settings app, etc.).
