Update to macOS Big Sur 11.1 from 11.0.1 fails

I'm having trouble updating from macOS Big Sur 11.0.1 to 11.1? I've had issues on both my 2013 Mac Pro and my 2016 13" MacBook Pro. In both cases, the upgrade appears to progress normally (you get progress bars during the reboot cycle, and you get a post-upgrade setup screen after reboot--which basically just requires re-entry of the iCloud password), but after the boot completes there is a kernel crash reporter, About This Mac still shows 11.0.1, and System Preferences still shows the 11. update as being available.

Both computers had a "clean" install to 11.0 when it was released (drive reformat, no time machine restore).

On my Mac Pro, the upgrade was successful on the second attempt. On the MacBook, I've had three failed attempts, all as described above.

Anybody else seeing this? Any suggestions?

Boot into Safe Mode by booting with the Shift key held down and try the update from there.

NOTE: Safe Mode boot can take up to 10 minutes as it's doing the following; =

• Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed

• Loads only required kernel extensions (prevents 3rd party kernel/extensions from loading)

• Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically

• Disables user-installed fonts

• Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files

I have the same issue. Cannot update in normal mode using software update or App Store download. File downloads to computer, then while “preparing macOS bugsir 11.1 update” it fails saying a problem with the internet connection. Same exact behavior in Safe Mode.

Called into Apple support and they suggested doing a format/reinstall as the only option.

Same issue with 2018 Mac Mini. But am unable to boot into Safe Mode. I have had problems with every Big Sur installation. First time round I had to download from the Apps Store before I could successfully install. I had major issues 11.01 and at the time couldn’t even get into recovery mode. Ended up taking it to Apple for a clean install. If I get things up and running again I think I’ll steer clear of future updates until Apple can get their act together.

Safe mode worked for me on my 2018 Mac mini and so far I've had no major issues with 11.1. I had to update a couple of programs but so far (knock wood) things are running well. If you have any USB drives connected, be sure to eject those before trying the install, even in safe mode. I think they may somehow interfere though not sure why. Once the install completed and rebooted, everything reconnected.

That worked thanks. Disconnected all the USB-A and USB-C cables. Ran disc utility first aid in Recovery Mode. Restarted in Safe Mode and it completed installation and booted up. Shutdown, reconnected all the USB cables, restarted without a hitch. Still loosing too many hours on this stuff and will sit out the next couple of updates.

OK this worked for me:

1) back everything up (CYA (cover your ***))

2) download full Big sur 11.1 (12gb)

3) disconnect wifi/ethernet once downloaded*

4) restart in safe mode

5) instal

6) job done

Apple support didn't even try this method with me. * if wifi or ethernet is on update will fail. The problem is not 3rd party software as previously claimed by apple. the issue is within the script when update calls home to apple)

No, regular user, but figured out it was the script in the update dialing home so to speak during update. the Update worked no issue on 2019 MacBook Air, but went tits up on Late 2015 iMAC 27" 32gb. So tried support who were just Blaming 3rd party software (exact same software on MacBook Air) so listened to their utter waffle followed their instructions and was like its not working. So sat back thought about it, and then came up with the fix I posted as it worked.
