Big Sur 11.1 External Display Issues!

I've installed macOS Big Sur 11.1 right after it launched today. My mistake lol

Unfortunately, I noticed my Type-C ports no longer recognize my two external monitors. I'm using HDMI to Type-C. So far my troubleshooting is as follows:

  1. PRAM reset. This seemed to help until I locked the display. Once unlocked via Touch ID, the True Tone went off and one of the two monitors went out and will no longer connect. Woot. Normally, when connecting an external display, the screen goes black then back on, however, the screen short-of lags and then doesn't ever detect an active connection.
  2. SMC reset. This actually didn't help at all... :(
  3. Fresh install, same issues.

Any suggestions?

The same issues started after installing Big Sur 11.1 on a MacBook Pro (15-inch, 2017) with LG 34UM95-P monitor. After trying many suggestions, the final solution was to go into LG monitor settings and enable DisplayPort 1.2.

Note that I also use Boot Camp and Windows had no problems detecting the external display. So, it doesn't seem to be computer hardware, monitor, or cabling issue.

According to apple support nothing is the matter, if so they would be overwhelmed with complaints... it somehow seems not to reach them. Apple support here in Holland only could react after i re-installed everything. I am facing a deadline and have no time to spend in actions of which i know from you all that it does not work...

So it sees we all should complain on the website of apple itself.?

Does anyone else have their external display function properly at random for about a day? So strange, I am still trying to figure out what I do that makes the external display function at 4k once in a while. Goes back to a pumpkin after sleep.

My computer froze yesterday so I force restarted by holding the physical power button down (USB-C external display cable was plugged into the MBP), when it restarted the display was back to normal, showing 4k. Twilight Zone music here.

Then, this morning after MBP sleep, it was back to it's glitchy low-res self. I restarted (regular restart, not the power button) with the USB-C cable plugged in and the display was back to 4k. Not without a fight, the monitor was "off", it would not display anything, so in my display preferences and clicked on "gather windows" button at the bottom right, and switched the scale to something else and back and the display turned on.

There seems to be no rhyme or reason, I've tried restarting before and had no results, but the display has worked properly twice this week. It's so intermittent I don't understand it. This is not a solution, and I don't think it will work consistently, but I found it peculiar. The display shows up at 4k maybe once a week without having done anything at all, this time I tried to replicate it and got it to work this morning. No confidence that this will work tomorrow.

Hi all,

I just received a call from apple care (Spain) we agree this call to make some diagnose tool and send logs to Engineering.

Finally we didn't run the tests because the guy told me that Apple now recognizes the issue, they have found what it cause and they are now working on the solution.

Good news, a mess this past weeks but for me good news.

I'm confirming, again, that restarting my computer by only holding down the physical power button on the keyboard is working for me to fix this problem, daily. I'm not holding down any other key on the keyboard, just the power button to shut off and again to turn on. Seems like a desperate move, but it is working for me.

It's not without momentary display glitches once in a while, like pixelated, fragmented, or strange bright green colors on some images when dragging them from built in display to the external. For the most part it's for a split second. And rarely, the glitches remain with viewing files in Photoshop like gray blank spots, then when I drag to the built in display, the file is ok.

To add my pennies to this thread.

I'm using a BenQ SW271 on a 2020 5k iMac using Big Sur 11.1

I have most the problems described in this thread. Initially with the USB C to USB C cable supplied with the BenQ, then with a Benfei Thunderbolt 3 to Display port cable and finally a Moshi USB C to Display Port cable as recommended by Apple support.

What I have come to realise is that the problem is with the USB/Thunderbolt interface on the iMac. When the problem occurs - whenever first booted or when power save mode turns off the displays - I have only to removed the USB C / Thunderbolt connector from the iMac, wait 3 - 4 seconds and then reconnect. No other actions necessary on the BenQ or with the Display Port connector. On reconnecting the iMac recognises the BenQ and restores the display at native resolution (3840 x 2160) using 60Hz refresh. All is then well until the next time I reboot or power-save mode starts.

I have a 4 day old Macbook Pro and a 2 year old Vizio monitor which worked perfectly. The 11.0.1 upgrade came through and it was like darkness descended in my universe, the monitor connection literally died in front of my eyes. I did the resets mentioned here, nothing, switched from C connection to HDMI port, nothing. It's like there Shall Be No External Monitors Henceforth. I don't know anybody that doesn't have at least 1 monitor and usually 2-3, is this real? This is the way it is supposed to work? HELP!!!!
