Big Sur 11.1 External Display Issues!

I've installed macOS Big Sur 11.1 right after it launched today. My mistake lol

Unfortunately, I noticed my Type-C ports no longer recognize my two external monitors. I'm using HDMI to Type-C. So far my troubleshooting is as follows:

  1. PRAM reset. This seemed to help until I locked the display. Once unlocked via Touch ID, the True Tone went off and one of the two monitors went out and will no longer connect. Woot. Normally, when connecting an external display, the screen goes black then back on, however, the screen short-of lags and then doesn't ever detect an active connection.
  2. SMC reset. This actually didn't help at all... :(
  3. Fresh install, same issues.

Any suggestions?

I don't have the option for "show low resolution mode". I tried each of the four, default, more space, larger text and one with just a line. No changes. Really starting to regret giving up my MacBook Pro for the new M1, but I am guessing this new "feature" is on both intel and M1?

I don't have automatic updates on, just woke up this morning and my external monitor and keyboard don't work. I thought it was the Thunderbolt port at first, but I have three different brands and models. Hyperdrive, PWC and Wavlink. None work.

Apple is really falling apart. I hope this is priority one. for 11.1a

Interested to know if this works for anyone else...

I posted a while back with the same issue. My monitor was not detected at all. I tried a lot of the solution offerings here and made up a few myself... and I can tell you it doesn't matter what side of the mouth you hold your tongue 👅

Incredibly I have now got my monitor back online with full resolution. I'll caveat this by saying "I have no fricken clue how this works and it doesn't make sense AND i can't even be sure what combo I did of the following but it works for me". I'm obviously reluctant to repeat the scenario incase the voodoo stops working and I lose my monitor again. So, it'll be interesting to see if this works for anyone else.

I think I took the USB-C cable for monitor out

I went into System Preferences >> Displays

As per someone else's instructions I tied to get the option to see all possible display resolutions.

https://osxdaily.com/2015/08/27/show-all-display-resolutions-external-screen-mac

I know the scale options never came up no matter what keys I was pressing but it was flicking between Default and Scaled

In the end I think I left it on Default.

Voodoo part... I then plugged my external monitor in and it was detected. WTAF

I then went back to display settings and bumped both of the resolutions to max and it worked fine.

I lost my monitor again at some point for no apparent reason and so did this tom foolery again and it worked.

If the community could give it a go and post back their steps if it worked maybe it'll help.

This is a horrible 'feature' and I feel for the community.

This worked for me! But i can't seem to get it to do it again. I also think it was something to do with having the MacBook pro's lid open. I have had the odd time where it detected properly in the past too, and all times the lid was open and I was on the display pane on settings.

Can anyone else isolate the exact scenario needed here? I can't seem to replicate it again.

Shame on Apple.

I've tried every solution suggested on this discussion board (except reinstalling Catalina) and nothing has worked. Unfortunately, apparently this issue isn't happening to enough people for Apple to be concerned. I wish there was a way to get Apple motivated to fix this problem which is a huge problem -- for me and others. As someone else said, who doesn't use an external monitor when working these days?

I sent a message to German magazine publisher "Mac life" and "Mac & i" (Heise) so that they have it on their screen. Maybe they now recognize it and do an article about that problem. Please share this problem also to other publication to motivate Apple to fix this asap.

I tried out the Display Menu App from the MacOS App Store. I think it worked - but it makes the typo in all HZ (60HZ/30 HZ) blurry. Its maybe a solution but not the best.

Facing the same issue. I have the Targus USB-C dock: https://us.targus.com/products/usb-c-universal-dv4k-docking-station-with-power-dock180usz?variant=14359411753018&gclid=Cj0KCQiAmL-ABhDFARIsAKywVacZpf7kzhgZxHqPmRWFN5PimN0dh7Nr6ioSRpyn_DfHPjJxQrdMg0AaAihfEALw_wcB.

I connect my 2019 Macbook 16in (ver. Big Sur 11.1) to the dock via USB-C -> USB-C (so both ends are usb-c) connection. The dock has additional DP ports connected to my monitors and it does not display or even register that other displays are connected, but the Macbook does register that it is being charged through the same dock.

Same dock works with other machines, although it is worth noting they are not apple machines (i.e., Lenovo ThinkPad p15s).

Oh thank goodness it's not just me. I've been suffering this exact problem, reformatted on the weekend thinking something must have been corrupted and was furious to find it's still completely broken on 11.1. The display has never caused a problem through Mojave, Catalina and 11.0, but 11.1 has really screwed something. There's no consistency in when it detects it correctly and when it doesn't. SMC/PRAM resets don't fix it. Occasionally it'll detect it perfectly, and then plugging in/out another display will bork and and suddenly it thinks it's a 1080p or 1600x900 or 1280x720 max resolution screen.

Based on a comment here I dropped the displayport version in the monitor OSD and it looks like it's detected it correctly, but I have zero faith it's not just a coincidence and will screw up again next time I have to restart.

Apple, please for the love of all things good, do something about your software quality. This is rubbish and you've been on a steady downward trajectory since Snow Leopard.

Try this guys, it works every time for me !

Macbook pro 16"

LG hdr 27"

BenQ EW327OU 32"

Step 1:

System Preferences -> Display

> HDMI Monitor -> Color ->

Calibrate... -> Click through all

the dialogs, Done!

Step 2:

Modify resolution on any different resolution in order to make the screen of the faulty monitor respond:

System preference/Displays.

If you don't see the resolution window of the faulty monitor then click to "Gather windows" and it will show up.

Step 3:

If the problem remain just unplug/plug in the monitor who have issues.

Let me know if it has work for you too, i hope this help.

I never even see the HDMI monitor to get the "calibrate" option in the system preferences panel.

This problem occurred on three different MacBook Air M1 with Big Sur 11.1

Yesterday none worked. This morning two of the three are working normal again with nothing being changed. Third one still not working.

Some other things to note. All three use different port replicators. One Wavlink, one OWC, one Hyperdrive. This morning my Air worked perfectly on all three. I had planned to reset NVRAM and if that didn't work Reinstall the OS. When I wiggled the mouse it woke up normally this morning.

The one that isn't working is the only one with an Apple Magic mouse, but it doesn't work on the other port replicators either so that one is getting the NVRAM reset now, but given that the other two started working after just sitting overnight, I am not sure we can call it a solution if it works.

This morning the issue happened again, only 2160 x 1040 as highest resolution available for my DELL U3219Q connected over USB-C to my MacBook Pro 2018. This time the hack with calibrating the colour didn't work. Spent 45 minutes of restarting and plugging in and out, logging in with a new user etc and then it randomly started working again. This really sucks! Please release a fix for this Apple! So many people are experiencing these issues.

Jan 27, 2021 10:59 PM in response to Duncaroo

Yes Apple the least you can do is have someone leave a reply to these 19 pages full of people experiencing these issues and wasting their time and energy on this random monitor issue. I have spoken to Apple Support (Netherlands) and it wasn't even on their radar, just gave me the good old reset SMC/PRAM advice that didn't work and after some other random stuff it started working again. Please take these complaints seriously, it's not as if we haven't paid enough to use your hard- and software! God **** this is annoying.

Jan 29, 2021 5:20 AM in response to iTimC21

Sadly, i had the same issue. I have a Macbook Pro 16" 2019 with MacOS Big Sur version 11.1.

I use a Startech Usb-c to DP adapter on the macbook to connect my LG external 4K monitor. After the update i have the formentioned problems. I couldn't use 4K anymore at 60hz. only 1080P or lower.

I have done everything that is suggested at no luck. Then i frustratingly started to fiddle with the settings in the monitor itself and found a solution that worked for me.

Step 1: Find the setting in the monitor on-display menu to set the version of displayport. Mine was originally set to version 1.4. After i changed that to version 1.2 4k suddenly went on. It was working again. I set it back to version 1.4 and stopped working So i changed it back to version 1.2 and have no problems anymore!

Hope this helps for someone!
