Big Sur 11.1 External Display Issues!

I've installed macOS Big Sur 11.1 right after it launched today. My mistake lol

Unfortunately, I noticed my Type-C ports no longer recognize my two external monitors. I'm using HDMI to Type-C. So far my troubleshooting is as follows:

  1. PRAM reset. This seemed to help until I locked the display. Once unlocked via Touch ID, the True Tone went off and one of the two monitors went out and will no longer connect. Woot. Normally, when connecting an external display, the screen goes black then back on, however, the screen short-of lags and then doesn't ever detect an active connection.
  2. SMC reset. This actually didn't help at all... :(
  3. Fresh install, same issues.

Any suggestions?

As many others, I have a similar issue.

I have two Monitors connected to my Mac Pro 7.1. An Eizo CS2730 and an Eizo S1721. The S1721 is the secondary monitor. It's connected via a DVI/USB C adapter.

After the Mac Pro starts, the secondary monitor won't be properly recognised. It seems to be in the system, but the display stays black. The monitor flashes a "No Signal" prompt in a short pattern, as if there would be a signal, but an unstable one.

If I unplug and reconnect the monitor, it works until the next time Big Sur boots up.

This problem ist enormously inconvenient. The Mac Pro is placed behind a mixer in the control room in my recording studio. It's an embarrassment every time I have to crawl around on my knees in front of the customers. Quite a few people ask, why Apples professional $10.000,- computer can't run two simple monitors as usual.

Please, Apple! I'd be forever grateful if this problem could be fixed … like ASAP! Think about the companies reputation amongst professional users! Pleeeease!

Hey guys, at this point any suggestion to get our monitors work properly is as good as any. Of course it doesn't solve the issue, but at least Samo, as well as many others, posted their temporarily solution - thanks.

However, please specify what equipment you're using, i e computer, monitor, cable, usb-hub (if any).

I'm on MBP 16" 2019, LG 32UD99 with LG usb c to usb c cable,

my solution:

Start/open MBP

Start LG monitor

Change input to hdmi 1

Shut down monitor

Start monitor, (computer now charging) wait for the OSD telling you hdmi is getting no signal, but click OK to change to usb-c

Click OK (on monitor)

Still - Apple - w*f, solve this crap.

I 'm using a 2019 MacBook Pro 16" and two 23" Apple Cinema HD Displays. Every thing worked until the first Big Sur update.

I don't have any access that I can see to change monitor settings. My outputs from the displays (in an umbilical cable) are DVI, Flash and USB.

Apple sent me an adapter with HDMI, USB-C, and USB inputs. All I can do is connect te USB-C via the DVI to USB-C adapter I already have (that used to work).

Nothing works.

I don't think they are doing anything about it... I just got my brand new mac mini with the M1 chip back from the not-so-"genius" bar and been told there is absolutely no issue with the device, even though when I have it connected to my Samsung Odyssey G9 monitor, there are issues with the video output signal as in every time it starts/restarts/wakes-up, doesn't sent the video signal to the monitor, so I am getting the "No Source" message....unplugging and replugging the USB-C to DisplayPort cable solves the issue until the next start/restart/wake-up. Of course, Apple blamed it on the G9 monitor, but the same monitor works well with my 16" MacBook Pro...then I have been told it may be the cable...so I told them again, it works with my 16"MBP...then they said "settings", and so on, until I have been told it is a new chip, with a new technology and this is what's happening with "revolutionary" technology...

In my opinion this is unacceptable, we are not testers, we PAID for the products.

Apple is just ignoring us...I wonder for how long?

I saw posts here from 5 months ago stating these issues and those not-that-competent engineers and software developpers were not capable of fixing this issue...

Yes, it is simply astounding that Apple doesn't care to put their vast resources into fixing this disastrous problem. I don't get it, many if not most people use external monitors -- which are now not supported by Apple. I would be so grateful if I had not trusted Apple and had not upgraded to Big Sur. Apparently those of us suffering this disaster are not making enough of a fuss for Apple to feel any pressure to fix this bug. Of course Big Sur should never have been released having this bug. Shame on Apple.

If we would all complain to Apple every single day, I guess they would get around to fixing this issue. The squeaky wheel gets oiled! I will be calling Apple again; and complaining on their website again, tomorrow.

I already complained to Trading Standards (via Citizens Advice, under Consumer Rights) for Deceptive Description/ False Advertising as the Mac mini is advertised as being able to "Connect one external display up to 6K and a second with HDMI 2.0 up to 4K" and in my case, the 5k display I am connecting, does not perform well (flickers in FCPX, and that is basically what I got the Mac mini for, being silent in FCPX and not sending video signal out after waking-up).

And, of course, the tech guys at apple not being capable of resolving my problem and returning the Mac mini saying it is working fine and then admitting they do not have a 5-6k monitor to test the thing...

The 11.2.2 update DOES NOT FIX the issue. I only have the original charger connected to my 16" MacBook Pro and the short Thunderbolt 3 cable that came with the monitor (Benq PD2720U). I have no hubs, nothing else. After the update it was even worse, either 800x600 or 1920x1080 maximum, sometimes it wouldn't even recognise the monitor, just like before. The only solution for me is to set to DisplayPort 1.2 from the advanced settings of the monitor. My other MacBook, which I didn't update and it's still on Catalina, has no issues whatsoever.

I have tried two different hubs and going direct and it makes no difference, my external monitor still doesn't work. 11.2 has not fixed the problem. There is no workaround which works for everyone. Hopefully, eventually Apple will fix this bug. In the meantime my productivity is decreased by not having use of my external monitor. As has been said before, WTF, we're all paying customers, not guinea pigs to try our BETA operating systems with MAJOR bugs. Shame on Apple for such extremely poor customer support -- and just not caring...

Every time they release a new update that doesn't fix it, I am submitting a new report now. If we all keep doing it, hopefully they will finally fix it by 11.3 is released.

People need to make sure they say it didn't happen in the first version of OS 11 or Catalina (or Windows Boot camp), so Apple don't just write it off as a problem with your adapter/monitor.

I made something stupid today: just bought a brand new Macbook Air M1 (8x GPU, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD) from Amazon (110€ off normal price; in order to be able to return it easily via Amazon if this test doesn't work), migrated from my 16" 2019 MBP via Thunderbolt cable in 7 minutes with 240GB of data and programs, upgraded from stock 11.1 to 11.2.2, rebooted, connected via USB-C natively to my Philips 499PH0 and got a native resolution of 5120x1440. I'm so shocked I need a beer. Insane!?!
