Big Sur 11.1 External Display Issues!

I've installed macOS Big Sur 11.1 right after it launched today. My mistake lol

Unfortunately, I noticed my Type-C ports no longer recognize my two external monitors. I'm using HDMI to Type-C. So far my troubleshooting is as follows:

  1. PRAM reset. This seemed to help until I locked the display. Once unlocked via Touch ID, the True Tone went off and one of the two monitors went out and will no longer connect. Woot. Normally, when connecting an external display, the screen goes black then back on, however, the screen short-of lags and then doesn't ever detect an active connection.
  2. SMC reset. This actually didn't help at all... :(
  3. Fresh install, same issues.

Any suggestions?

Same problem. Just installed 11.2.1 - No Joy.

I'm running a Macbook Pro 2016 - 2019

32GB ram 4TB.

I'm connected to a J5Create JCD543. Via USB-C

2 DELL SE 2719HR displays.

Also tested on a 2019 Macbook Air. - No joy

Prior to Big Sur, my set up was solid.

Work Arounds: As of Feb 16 2021

Option 1: j5Create just launched a driver. But...well... as of now, it's not useable. It works. Kind of... but it's DJTVirtualDisplayAgent and some other USB virtual software that needs to be approved by security. It enables the second display, but with a 1 or 2 second screen lag. So any interaction with items on that display are slow. Like using Virtual PC in the 1990's. Maybe they will improve this.

Option 2: Use 2 USB-C ports. So, one cable goes into the j5Create hub and the second goes into an HDMI to USB-C adapter. Not the end of the world, but does require an extra USB-C port. results in normal use of 2 displays.

Option 3: I tried other hubs (prices may have changed since posting this.)

USB-3 Hub 123.99

https://amzn.to/3jV4aYp (both displays worked, but requires a special USB-C dual port cable) - returned

Portable USB-C hub pro $59

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0855GZ7PT (both displays worked, but also requires 2 ports, plus, it's a short cable, all cables must be visible on the table. I'm sure you know what I mean.. messy. - returned

Docking Station OKX $149

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08HLXLW1Q (Yes, best choice so far. only requires 1 cable and has lots of ports. BUT It does require a driver.

https://www.displaylink.com/downloads

It's still a hack. requires you to be logged into the user account that you have installed the software. So, that means 1 display will be active while rebooting, up until you actually log in, then after about 15 seconds, it launches the second display. No lag, it works well as a work around. This one I'm keeping.

Oh, to save you time, I tried installing this displaylink software to use with other hubs. No dice, it looks for it's own hardware. sorry... (as of the time of this posting. Maybe that will change)

Summary:

I kept the OKX docking with displaylink for my home office. It's nice and clean, with the hub hidden and a 1 simple cable into my USB-C port (also provides power). Nice... but cluncky when rebooting. Must wait for software to load.

At work, I kept the j5Create. 1 USB-C cable from the hub, and all my devices are neatly tucked away. Requires a second HDMI-USBC cable to power 2 monitors, and takes 2 ports. Hopefully Apple will figure out the conflicting software or someone will find a terminal hack to help us all out.

I am having the same issue trying to connect MacBook to an old iMac using a Belkin DisplayPort cable. I managed to see the displays when I hooked it up to my Smart TV, but that was before I upgraded to BigSur 2 days ago. Big Sur is also causing issue with using my Snowball mic, which no longer works since upgrade. BigSur is a big disappointment so far. I don't get all the marketing hype. Belkin info says it's basically a breeze to set up. Try getting their Customer support on the weekend. God Luck. BTW, Apple Support says it's a Belkin issue, not theirs.

Thank you everyone for your feedback. There are two things I want to try:

    1. Change the resolution on BigSur to 1080, but I can't see how to do that. BigSur has changed the Resolution options and I no longer see numbers, only icons with no numbers.
    2. If I can't successfully change to 1080 manually, I will see if it is possible to switch back to Catalina OS.

BTW, I find opening documents so much slower with BigSur now and, yes, I do have lots of free space, so that is not the issue. Opening docs was lightning fast with Catalina.

I agree so far with one of you who said BigSur is not ready for release.

problem for my MacBook Pro started today (19 Jan 2021), I updated to Big Sur 11.1 a couple of weeks earlier... Now, if I connect external display, even with lid open, I all my displays (external + internal) go blank. Cannot see a thing, until I unplug the HDMI cable (via apple usb-c connector). I have tried all sort of things: changing HDMI cable, converters and also many of the tricks and tips listed above.... no resolution.

from iPad I checked external display, everything fine.

Last week, my HomePod gave in.. on Big Sur, it wouldn't work (no sound at all). My Service request still pending, Apple folks even asked me to reinstall, but in my heart I don't think they would cut it.

Big Sur is a bigger problem. I can't imagine how the QA was done, standards have gone down a lot.

I wish I could go back to 11.0.1, everything was working fine.

I have decided to buy a 2TB drive and back up my Mac afresh and then reinstall Mac OS X Snow Leopard. You might want to do the same.

I have had too many issues since upgrading to BigSur last week, Even restarting and opening files is too slow. My Mac won't recognize my external drive or my external Snowball Mic. Even signing in to this forum was a pain when I clicked the link in the email as instructed.

I think Apple is smart setting up these forums. It is using us as the guinea pigs to pinpoint the bugs that they should have found first before release.

Are you listening, Apple?

According to apple support nothing is the matter, if so they would be overwhelmed with complaints... it somehow seems not to reach them. Apple support here in Holland only could react after i re-installed everything. I am facing a deadline and have no time to spend in actions of which i know from you all that it does not work...

So it sees we all should complain on the website of apple itself.?

Hi all,

I just received a call from apple care (Spain) we agree this call to make some diagnose tool and send logs to Engineering.

Finally we didn't run the tests because the guy told me that Apple now recognizes the issue, they have found what it cause and they are now working on the solution.

Good news, a mess this past weeks but for me good news.

I have a 4 day old Macbook Pro and a 2 year old Vizio monitor which worked perfectly. The 11.0.1 upgrade came through and it was like darkness descended in my universe, the monitor connection literally died in front of my eyes. I did the resets mentioned here, nothing, switched from C connection to HDMI port, nothing. It's like there Shall Be No External Monitors Henceforth. I don't know anybody that doesn't have at least 1 monitor and usually 2-3, is this real? This is the way it is supposed to work? HELP!!!!

I don't have the option for "show low resolution mode". I tried each of the four, default, more space, larger text and one with just a line. No changes. Really starting to regret giving up my MacBook Pro for the new M1, but I am guessing this new "feature" is on both intel and M1?

I don't have automatic updates on, just woke up this morning and my external monitor and keyboard don't work. I thought it was the Thunderbolt port at first, but I have three different brands and models. Hyperdrive, PWC and Wavlink. None work.

Apple is really falling apart. I hope this is priority one. for 11.1a
