Big Sur 11.1 External Display Issues!

I've installed macOS Big Sur 11.1 right after it launched today. My mistake lol

Unfortunately, I noticed my Type-C ports no longer recognize my two external monitors. I'm using HDMI to Type-C. So far my troubleshooting is as follows:

  1. PRAM reset. This seemed to help until I locked the display. Once unlocked via Touch ID, the True Tone went off and one of the two monitors went out and will no longer connect. Woot. Normally, when connecting an external display, the screen goes black then back on, however, the screen short-of lags and then doesn't ever detect an active connection.
  2. SMC reset. This actually didn't help at all... :(
  3. Fresh install, same issues.

Any suggestions?

Same problem. Just installed 11.2.1 - No Joy.

I'm running a Macbook Pro 2016 - 2019

32GB ram 4TB.

I'm connected to a J5Create JCD543. Via USB-C

2 DELL SE 2719HR displays.

Also tested on a 2019 Macbook Air. - No joy

Prior to Big Sur, my set up was solid.

Work Arounds: As of Feb 16 2021

Option 1: j5Create just launched a driver. But...well... as of now, it's not useable. It works. Kind of... but it's DJTVirtualDisplayAgent and some other USB virtual software that needs to be approved by security. It enables the second display, but with a 1 or 2 second screen lag. So any interaction with items on that display are slow. Like using Virtual PC in the 1990's. Maybe they will improve this.

Option 2: Use 2 USB-C ports. So, one cable goes into the j5Create hub and the second goes into an HDMI to USB-C adapter. Not the end of the world, but does require an extra USB-C port. results in normal use of 2 displays.

Option 3: I tried other hubs (prices may have changed since posting this.)

USB-3 Hub 123.99

https://amzn.to/3jV4aYp (both displays worked, but requires a special USB-C dual port cable) - returned

Portable USB-C hub pro $59

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0855GZ7PT (both displays worked, but also requires 2 ports, plus, it's a short cable, all cables must be visible on the table. I'm sure you know what I mean.. messy. - returned

Docking Station OKX $149

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08HLXLW1Q (Yes, best choice so far. only requires 1 cable and has lots of ports. BUT It does require a driver.

https://www.displaylink.com/downloads

It's still a hack. requires you to be logged into the user account that you have installed the software. So, that means 1 display will be active while rebooting, up until you actually log in, then after about 15 seconds, it launches the second display. No lag, it works well as a work around. This one I'm keeping.

Oh, to save you time, I tried installing this displaylink software to use with other hubs. No dice, it looks for it's own hardware. sorry... (as of the time of this posting. Maybe that will change)

Summary:

I kept the OKX docking with displaylink for my home office. It's nice and clean, with the hub hidden and a 1 simple cable into my USB-C port (also provides power). Nice... but cluncky when rebooting. Must wait for software to load.

At work, I kept the j5Create. 1 USB-C cable from the hub, and all my devices are neatly tucked away. Requires a second HDMI-USBC cable to power 2 monitors, and takes 2 ports. Hopefully Apple will figure out the conflicting software or someone will find a terminal hack to help us all out.

I've tried every solution suggested on this discussion board (except reinstalling Catalina) and nothing has worked. Unfortunately, apparently this issue isn't happening to enough people for Apple to be concerned. I wish there was a way to get Apple motivated to fix this problem which is a huge problem -- for me and others. As someone else said, who doesn't use an external monitor when working these days?

Facing the same issue. I have the Targus USB-C dock: https://us.targus.com/products/usb-c-universal-dv4k-docking-station-with-power-dock180usz?variant=14359411753018&gclid=Cj0KCQiAmL-ABhDFARIsAKywVacZpf7kzhgZxHqPmRWFN5PimN0dh7Nr6ioSRpyn_DfHPjJxQrdMg0AaAihfEALw_wcB.

I connect my 2019 Macbook 16in (ver. Big Sur 11.1) to the dock via USB-C -> USB-C (so both ends are usb-c) connection. The dock has additional DP ports connected to my monitors and it does not display or even register that other displays are connected, but the Macbook does register that it is being charged through the same dock.

Same dock works with other machines, although it is worth noting they are not apple machines (i.e., Lenovo ThinkPad p15s).

I spent nearly an hour trying to chat with support. Twice the chat ended due to a « temporary system issue ».

The response was the standard

  1. reset NVRAM
  2. reinstall OS.

I pasted the link to this thread in the chat and I am sure they ignored it.

I tweeted from the cooltoystv official account and my account to get this started. Beachstreetnews is next.

Just because I have nothing better to do with my day, I’ll stop working on Fan2stage.com and CoolToysTV.com and reinstall the OS. Maybe I’ll call my dentist and get a root canal at the same time so I don’t notice the pain.

Yes Apple the least you can do is have someone leave a reply to these 19 pages full of people experiencing these issues and wasting their time and energy on this random monitor issue. I have spoken to Apple Support (Netherlands) and it wasn't even on their radar, just gave me the good old reset SMC/PRAM advice that didn't work and after some other random stuff it started working again. Please take these complaints seriously, it's not as if we haven't paid enough to use your hard- and software! God **** this is annoying.

OK - more info from testing tonight. This is a firmware issue on the graphics adapter. Again, I have a Mac Pro Rack 2019. When I originally experienced this issue in late December, I got no display whatsoever with my previously-working Owens Corning optical Thunderbolt 3 cables to my current LG 5K2K monitor. As a troubleshooting measure, I took out my W5700X module and put the original 580MX back in but had the same problem. That 580MX was installed when I applied the 11.2 update earlier this evening that fixed the problem - full resolution @ 60Hz with the optical cable.

However, when I put the more powerful W5700X module back in the system, it went right back to the same problem - no video via the optical cable. Fortunately, I had backed up to an external Thunderbolt 3 flash drive before this whole mess started. Thinking that the 11.2 update must have applied firmware updates as a part of the process, I booted up my old 10.15.7 OS from December with the W5700X installed (used another cable to get lower res video given that the optical cables didn't work again) and re-applied the 11.2 update. After several PRAM and SMC resets, this all now works.

This doesn't apply to many of you - you don't have the option to switch out graphics cards with MacBook Pros. However, if you're in my situation, make sure you have the graphics card that you desire to permanently use installed when you apply the 11.2 update. The upgrade process updates the firmware on the card and the fix won't work if you do the update with a different card installed.

Crazy night - happy to be at full 5K2K resolution @ 60Hz once again. Very concerned by all this - no way this should have passed Apple QA processes....

We are all sharing your frustration. Lesson Learned: wait at least 6 months after an upgrade to upgrade, which I did almost absentmindedly after receiving numerous requests from Apple to do so.

BTW, I am about to purchase a new iMac. Do you know if the issue is plaguing both laptops and iMacs? Also, can anyone recommend the best cable or cables I will need to connect the two Macs. I already have one 2-foot cable that has a lighting connector at one end and an HDMI connector at the other.

Thanks!

I have the exact same setup as you and this issue has been causing me so much frustration. Apple has lost so much of my faith with this. How on earth they haven't fixed this issue by now is beyond me. The most frustrating thing is that there isn't even a workaround. Has anyone had any luck with any other cable solution? Maybe usb-c to HDMI?

You got lucky then.

My combination of MacMini M1 with 11.2 and BenQ PD2720U still does NOT support 60Hz above 720p scaling when connected via TB3! Tried all suggestions, including lowering the DP version to 1.2 in the monitor.

On the other hand, my son's MBP13" 2018 works just fine via TB3 on the same monitor, even after upgrading from 11.0 to 11.2 directly.

I am holding my breath. I just updated to OS 11.2 and have 3440 x 1440. However, about a week or so ago I booted into this resolution and was elated for about two days. Then, I was back into low resolution once again. So I am holding my breath. FYI I am on an external ViewSonic and using a MacBook Pro, 2019, with AMD Radeon Pro 5500M and Intel UHD Graphics 630.

Crossing my fingers.

I read through all of your posts and agree that a workaround is needed in order to be allowed to work. However I’d strongly push on Apple with calls to customer service to keep them awake that we’re not forgetting this issue! It is causing too many problems to allow them just to forget about it.

I’m now waiting for a LG 32un880 ergo. It is supposed to be delivered on Sunday. I’ll let you know how it works
