Big Sur 11.1 External Display Issues!

I've installed macOS Big Sur 11.1 right after it launched today. My mistake lol

Unfortunately, I noticed my Type-C ports no longer recognize my two external monitors. I'm using HDMI to Type-C. So far my troubleshooting is as follows:

  1. PRAM reset. This seemed to help until I locked the display. Once unlocked via Touch ID, the True Tone went off and one of the two monitors went out and will no longer connect. Woot. Normally, when connecting an external display, the screen goes black then back on, however, the screen short-of lags and then doesn't ever detect an active connection.
  2. SMC reset. This actually didn't help at all... :(
  3. Fresh install, same issues.

Any suggestions?

Same problem. Just installed 11.2.1 - No Joy.

I'm running a Macbook Pro 2016 - 2019

32GB ram 4TB.

I'm connected to a J5Create JCD543. Via USB-C

2 DELL SE 2719HR displays.

Also tested on a 2019 Macbook Air. - No joy

Prior to Big Sur, my set up was solid.

Work Arounds: As of Feb 16 2021

Option 1: j5Create just launched a driver. But...well... as of now, it's not useable. It works. Kind of... but it's DJTVirtualDisplayAgent and some other USB virtual software that needs to be approved by security. It enables the second display, but with a 1 or 2 second screen lag. So any interaction with items on that display are slow. Like using Virtual PC in the 1990's. Maybe they will improve this.

Option 2: Use 2 USB-C ports. So, one cable goes into the j5Create hub and the second goes into an HDMI to USB-C adapter. Not the end of the world, but does require an extra USB-C port. results in normal use of 2 displays.

Option 3: I tried other hubs (prices may have changed since posting this.)

USB-3 Hub 123.99

https://amzn.to/3jV4aYp (both displays worked, but requires a special USB-C dual port cable) - returned

Portable USB-C hub pro $59

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0855GZ7PT (both displays worked, but also requires 2 ports, plus, it's a short cable, all cables must be visible on the table. I'm sure you know what I mean.. messy. - returned

Docking Station OKX $149

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08HLXLW1Q (Yes, best choice so far. only requires 1 cable and has lots of ports. BUT It does require a driver.

https://www.displaylink.com/downloads

It's still a hack. requires you to be logged into the user account that you have installed the software. So, that means 1 display will be active while rebooting, up until you actually log in, then after about 15 seconds, it launches the second display. No lag, it works well as a work around. This one I'm keeping.

Oh, to save you time, I tried installing this displaylink software to use with other hubs. No dice, it looks for it's own hardware. sorry... (as of the time of this posting. Maybe that will change)

Summary:

I kept the OKX docking with displaylink for my home office. It's nice and clean, with the hub hidden and a 1 simple cable into my USB-C port (also provides power). Nice... but cluncky when rebooting. Must wait for software to load.

At work, I kept the j5Create. 1 USB-C cable from the hub, and all my devices are neatly tucked away. Requires a second HDMI-USBC cable to power 2 monitors, and takes 2 ports. Hopefully Apple will figure out the conflicting software or someone will find a terminal hack to help us all out.

Updated to Big Sur 11.5. It still crashes if you unplug and then plug back the external display, with a BenQ SW320. And BlueTooth is still lagging with Apple's TrackPad so keeping in a wired mode with the lightning.

I really don't get what's so wrong for Apple not to fix something like that. I mean they must get quite a lot of crash report on this one every week...

Yesterday I updated to Big Sur 11.5 on my MacBook Pro with new M1 chipset, hoping it fixes my issues I have with my external MSI MAG341CQ connected via HDMI port on an Anker USB-C PowerExpand+ 7in1 Media Hub.

Unfortunately it did not! Since Big Sur 11.1 or so, the MSI monitor operates at only 30Hz (3440x1440) and I also consider random input lags with my Logitech mouse connected via bluetooth.

I do not have those issues with the same setup when running my windows 10 laptop! I get a proper 60Hz output with the same exact resolution, also there are no mouse stutter or whatsoever.

I truly do not understand that those many complains people have are not recognized or even ignored by apple! I mean those products are really expensive stuff and apple is making a ton of money with it, so why the **** isn't this not already fixed? It is such a pain in the a** working with such a messy setup!

Please apple fix those issues, finally!

Yep so I'm here with the same problem. Just bought the M1 air, very very happy with it other than it doesn't like external devices. Did expect this problem - but shouldn't have to. I have an MX master mouse - which has connected without issues. Plus an LG external monitor, which right now is displayed neon pink & lime green. Which is seriously disrupting my work flow & giving me eye strain. So erm.. is this gonna get patched or are we basically waiting for the next OS.

If Apple Support reads this - I'm very happy with my M1 machine, I am not happy about this problem. My mother also uses Big Sur on an M1 macbook pro & she has had to buy a new bluetooth mouse to achieve a connection. These issues seem to be totally device specific to me (as in, its not a universal fix), which would explain why it has been so difficult to patch the issue.

Well...just bought a new J5Create USB 3.0 to HDMI (JUA354) adapter to connect 2015 iMac to Acer monitor, as my older (last year!) Insignia adapter did not support Big Sur. Couldn't get the new one to work after lots of trying, saw the new 11.5.2 BS (!) update, so just installed it. NOW my Acer monitor is working, but ONLY mirroring! And still doesn't show up in Control Center or Displays so I can't unselect mirroring! Wow, what an improvement. Is this stuff tested before getting put out there, and if so, with what? At least I know the monitor works with Big Sur...but a mirrored-only display is not the least helpful! Apple, what the heck??? I guess they ARE trying... :+O

I have a 2010 Mac Pro running Mojave. I was able to boot the hard drive with an external hard drive encasing through my MacBook. Since the MacBook has a built in screen I was able to access the drive and apple finally came out with an update that I performed and now my external displays receive the signal. I wonder how many people ran out and replaced their computers? My 2010 Mac Pro is upgraded and a great machine. I think it's ridiculous that apple literally refers to it as 'vintage' & 'obsolete' & even criminal that they stop allowing it to update. The fact that I can no longer air drop with my Mac Pro says it all.

Macbook pro 16" , BigSur 11.6 on Docking Station HP-G5 with 2x HP EliteDisplay Monitors 27" .

The docking station is working great with other non-mac laptops.

On my macbook I only got it to recognize the external monitors once and they worked as one (mirror).

I tried all usb-c ports and the laptop crashed twice.

I would really like to know if this is OS related or if I need another docking station (and if yes which one would it be).

Either way, a huge disappointment for a 4.000$ laptop.

Having a similar, though not as disastrous result. The symptom is my external monitor cycles through a series of full-screen monochromatic displays of various colors when the MacBook is closed and the system goes into screen-saver mode. I've checked System Settings and nothing has changed. This has occurred with the upgrade to 11.6, on an M1 2020 MacBook Proc and a LePow monitor.

This is not just a Big Sur problem. I'm running Catalina 10.15.7. I have an external monitor that I like to switch back and forth between my Windows PC and my Mac. The Windows box has no problem with the cable being yanked out and then plugged back in - it detects whether the monitor is there or not and adjusts accordingly. The Mac gets confused and ***** its pants. How Mac ever got the reputation for "it just works" I do not understand.
