Disc Utility first aid stopped working. I have 4 drives 2 portable, time machine and another back up.
The time machine started having issue like not mounting. So I used the First aid and it does not work on all 4 devices, its just hangs and nothing happens. It used to work 100%, showing verified disk is OK, what happened? Thanks.

Amazing, you read my mind. All my drives (have many) are mechanically driven, Seaget WD. Right now I am using one of the portable ones, the Seagate 2TB as a Time Machine that I purchased in 2016. I heard that a solid state is the way to go, but they are not cheap. Thanks for your help today and in the past.

These drives are the ones that lasted me the longest, SSDs are nice, but mostly too expensive for me to use as backups .

Now WD & Seagate make decent drives, but don't buy their cases, they're cruddy cheap.

Apple has great support, especially by Senior Advisors, but they are not as heavy users as you and other active members of the community. Therefore Apple should allocate some budget to reward you guys, because you are the main ones who find the solution.

Seems one of the Devices at least is really defective, so unplug one at a time until you can run DU.
