No suggestions more suggestions will be shown once Message finishes indexing

Since updating my Macbook to Big Sur my Messages app just keeps saying:

No suggestions more suggestions will be shown once Message finishes indexing

I've searched and searched but no luck. I also tried toggling it on and off in spotlight in hopes of restarting the indexing - any ideas on how to get this working? I need to search my text messages on my computer.
