No Mail Audio Notifications

I was using the BigSur beta and thought it was a bug that there were no audio notifications in Mail. But I recently wiped my system and reinstalled the latest version (not beta) of Big Sur and I still don't have any audio notifications. It this a bug? It's sort of annoying not to be able to get any sound when an email comes in. I get the outgoing mail sound sounds, but no incoming. It looks like no matter what you have notifications set to for mail, nothing is being displayed.

Same problem on my Macbook Pro M1 received yesterday and updated to 11.4. No banner and no sound even if notifications settings are correctly set from preferences.

For now, the only workaround is to change notification style settings from "banners" (that do not work properly) to "alerts" and then switch off and turn on again the mail notifications.

Notifications work fine on other apps (the issue is located only in the Mail App).

Another possible solution is to use another app until new updates will be released.

Hey there Mozarti,

We'd like to help get those new Mail notifications working right. Let's start with some basics:

  1. You mentioned reinstalling the latest official macOS Big Sur version, which is macOS 11.1. You can verify which version number is installed by clicking on the Apple logo at the top left corner of the screen, then on ‘About This Mac’. Here's how to first Back up your Mac with Time Machine, and afterwards, here's How to update the software on your Mac.
  2. If you haven't tried a restart yet after reinstalling the macOS, we recommend a restart of your Mac. Check out the section 'Restart' here: Log out, sleep, wake, restart, or shut down your Mac
  3. It'll be a good idea to test choosing another 'new messages' sound. Check out the steps under the section 'New messages sound' here: Change General preferences in Mail on Mac
  4. To test a new user, check out the steps under 'Add a user' here: Set up users, guests, and groups on Mac

Take care.

Of course none of these worked. I really think there is a bug in the OS that even though notifications are turned on in Mac, I am not getting any notifications in Mail and I have turned off notifications and the back on several time. I am hoping this is an issue with my specific MBP model and when my new M1 chip comes, it will go away. But in the meantime, I am happy to use Outlook.

Hello again Sopranik - Mail only receives mail when the app is active (i.e. there is a dot underneath the Mail icon in the Dock). If you shut it down, it won't tell you you have new mail until you open the app again. I'm no expert, and I may be wrong, but I don't think there's any way around this, and is just the way apps work on macOS (i.e. on when they're on, off when they're off)

This is ridiculous!! APPLE PEOPLE...PLEASE PAY ATTENTION. For me, I get an incoming sound, but no outgoing "whoosh". No matter what I did, I cannot get that sound back and this cannot be a hard fix. There are so many people with the issue. Not sure if anyone at Apple cares, but I'm now using Outlook for my mail as I get all of the sounds. So...now I know it's not the sound on my BRAND NEW APPLE MACBOOK AIR WITH THE M1 CHIP!
