MacBook Air shutting off

MacOS High Sierra version 10.13.6

Macbook Air 13” 2017

repeatedly shuts down a few seconds after being unplugged making a battery cycle impossible but also shuts down randomly during use while plugged in sometimes within 5 minutes sometimes within hours with no warning.

Running diagnostics = No issues found reference ADP0000.

Battery health displays as Normal with a cycle count in the 170s

Coconut battery also shows everything as normal.

SMART utility showing green passed in overall status and disk 0 and disk 1.

Terminal responding to log show of previous shut down causes with “log warning: the log archive contains partial or missing metadata log: cannot use —last when archive metadata is missing” and I don’t know what to look for within console or what else I can do to try and locate the cause of my shut downs.

I did read somewhere that being plugged in constantly messes with the ability to determine a threshold and I would love to cycle it but I can’t keep it on long enough without being plugged in. I’m hoping someone here may have some more ideas on what to look for or things I can check to determine what is faulty

Hi Loldans,

Have you fixed this problem? I am facing the same issue- i.e. my MacBook Air 2017 also randomly shutdown without restarting when power adapter is not plugged making a battery cycle impossible.

I have tried following with no avail,

  1. Diagnostics which didn't report anything wrong.
  2. Disk repair from Disk Utility.
  3. SMC and PRAM reset.
  4. "Clean install" of Big Sur Mac OS.i.e I formatted my drive in recovery mode and installed the OS from a bootable drive.

The Battery health on System Report shows

Health Information:
 Count:	846
 Condition:	Normal

Previous shutdown cause shows

kernel: (AppleSMC) Previous shutdown cause: -128

Apple Support has no clue. I have ran out of things I can try. Please Help!

Hi Loldans,

We understand that your MacBook Air is shutting down or restarting unexpectedly. When the Mac restarts, do you see any sort of error message? If there's no error message, have you noticed whether the same apps are open when the Mac shuts down? The resource below may help as well.

If your Mac restarted because of a problem

The battery in your MacBook Air shouldn't need to be cycled, as it won't develop a charging memory the way a NiCd or NiMH battery would. We have some really good information about maximizing battery performance in the article below, and upgrading macOS to Big Sur would provide some additional details about the battery health as well.
