I can't see the software update icon on system preferences and i'm not even able to connect my Iphone to my MacBook Air through a USB cable. What can I do?

If you have Mac OS 10.13 that is good enough to update your iPhone using your computer. If you go to Menu/About This Mac/Software Update and there is no update listed then that is the highest Mac OS version your Mac supports. But you should still be able to update your iPhone with it. Just make sure you have the most recent version of iTunes from https://itunes.com.
From there connect your phone and look for its icon in iTunes and click on it.

It's an IPhone XS. When I open system preferences I don't see the software update icon, that's why I am not able to update (if there are any updates). Also, I thought it was related to my Iphone, therefore I updated it but nothing changed.
You also posted in the iPhone forum, which somehow implied that you wanted to update your iPhone. Then in your post you said it was an iPhone XS.
To update your Mac go to the Menu/About This Mac/Software Update
I'll try to explain myself better: I have two problems: one is that I can't see the Software update on my computer. The other one is that I'm not able to connect my Iphone to my computer through USB cable and I believe it's related.
What model iPhone? What do you see when you go to Settings/General/Software Update?
You don’t update an iPhone from the Mac end. ON YOUR iPHONE tap the Settings icon, then tap General, then tap Software Update.
I know, I don't need to update my Phone, it is already updated. The problem is with the computer. I probably expressed myself wrong earlier.
