Cardio Fitness doesn't have Apple Watch as a data source

I update my iphone and apple watch yesterday. But the cardio fitness says no data. When I checked I noticed that it does not have any datasources. My Apple Watch was not added automatically. I cannot find a way to add it manually as well. What can be done?

I thought of unpairing and pairing again. But then it will not have my previous data right?

Ok, my i s working now. What I did...

I've started my training "Walk outside" outside with my iPhone (iPhone 11 pro with 14.3 iOS) with me. Walked only about 1 km (9 minutes) and after ending this trening, cardio fitness on Health App on my iPhone is visible.

I hope this will work for you as well.

Cheers

The VO2max data was displayed until 31 december, after that it stopped.

For another reason I had to reconnect the watch on 1st Jan, after that, there was no V2Omax Data until I renamed the watch and went out for a run.

Is this a new watch or a watch you have had before the cardio fitness update?
• Its a older Watch4

When you say "symptoms", what do you mean exactly?
• Just I was not able to get the V2Omax data displayed, did enough runs, outdoor, gps enabled, maps app installed, restarts, latest updates etc.
I saw 3x same watchname in data source, that why I tried to rename the watch.

When you say "recorded again" do you mean you previously had measurement

Given this, it is highly likely that it had nothing to do with renaming the watch as it is normal for duplicate names (eg Apple Watch 4) to be listed as data sources. It normally takes a few days for VO2max data to show up after a new watch is installed/re-paired so this was the right amount of time. Probably just a coincidence.

Hello Osugrad85, steps to edit source, where it is already recording data, say heartbeat ... Open health app> heart>data source>( you must be having couple of datasources if its not a 1st watch)> press edit on top right corner> move up = sign next to current watch data source manually to top.. >done, sorry i am not a professional.. just trying to help fellow apple watch user..:-) hope it works for you..:-))

"Now you have to do an outdoor workout while walking or running for at least 20 minutes."

This is not correct. Apple had specifically said with 14.3. you do NOT have to do a workout to get VO2max readings. See the following:

"watchOS 7 also allows Apple Watch to take cardio fitness measurements as users walk throughout the day, whether or not they are tracking a workout. "

Since the update I have had multiple data points where I was not tracking any workouts. This was not true in earlier versions.

FWIW, I have been working for the past few weeks with Apple support to get my issue with Cardio Fitness resolved (no Cardio Fitness data since purchasing my iPhone 11 and Apple Watch series 5 new in November 2019 nor after upgrading the watch to a new Series 6 in November 2020). In my case Apple confirmed that my settings are correct, my workouts satisfy the requirements to generate Cardio Fitness data, etc (and I have tried every suggestion posted in this thread). At Apple’s request, I have logged many additional outdoor walking and outdoor running workouts with Apple provided diagnostic profiles loaded on my watch and phone, which they later downloaded from me. They called me today to say that the Apple engineers are still reviewing the diagnostic information obtained from me but they do not yet have an answer or solution. They did acknowledge that other users have also reported problems similar to mine. They promised to continue to update me as they work to solve this problem. If I receive an answer/solution, I will post it here.

I have done EVERYTHING. Paring, unpairing. Brisk 20 minute outdoor walk. Monkeying with data sources. An hour on the phone with Apple where they tried everything. In the end, I simply show no cardio fitness data. And two Apple technicians didn’t even know about the "new" cardio fitness feature. This has driven me mad. If anyone has some magic bullet I haven’t tried please let me and Apple know. I have the Apple Watch 6, the iPhone 12 Pro Max. This is crazy.

In my case, I have data from previous watches in the data source area of the cardio fitness section. My currtent Watch 6 is not there. And there is no way to edit the propietary order of watches as is the case in the other data source areas. This is a bug and I've talked to Apple. They say wait it out, a fix will likely come. What does not inpsire confidence is none of the advisors had even heard of the cardio fitness feature. I have a friend who has the watch 6, but it's her first watch and it shows up as the data source.

Also, it does not seem to be true that you need to do workouts in order to get cardio fitness readings. Apple has said that the watch is now capable of generating such readings even with low intensity activities outside of workouts. I think the answer for most people is simply waiting for readings to show up. https://www.apple.com/newsroom/2020/12/cardio-fitness-notifications-are-available-today-on-apple-watch/

I understand of course. Unfortunately, I don't think you have any alternative other than trying to go back to the factory install. That should tell you at least if the problem is with the watch or not. I suppose there could be an issue with Apple Health but that would be a nightmare to try and figure out.

Let me know whenever you decide to give it a try.

"However, Apple made a change recently in the iOS. Now for it to record Vo2 Max you have to run for 20 minutes at 10 mph."

That is not Apple's official position nor is it true. I have had cardio fitness data show up with far less intense activity than that. It's simply takes a while for the data to show up but people are mistaking whatever they did at that point in time as a requirement. Apple has made a big point that the update actually REDUCED the amount of activity required not increased it.

"More" may not be the relevant variable here although it's hard to say without knowing the algorithm that Apple is using. It's been my impression on this thread that everybody who says the data isn't showing up has it show up after a period of time although they attribute this to a whole series of different things. The only thing constant here seems to be time.

I am glad that Cardio Fitness magically started working for some people, but it still isn’t working for me. I started using my new Series 5 watch (always running the latest IOS) in November of 2019 with lots of outdoor walks and outdoor runs using the Workout app, all of which have been longer than 20 minutes. I got exactly ONE VO2Max data point recorded (December 5th, 2019) out of literally hundreds of qualifying workouts. I upgraded to a Series 6 watch (always running the latest IOS) in November 2020 and still have not had any new Cardio Fitness data recorded. In desperation I deleted that one data point from December 2019, hoping that would prompt a new data point, but nothing. In fact, when I check the Health App and Cardio Fitness, there is NOTHING listed as a data source for this feature. I have tried re-pairing the watch as a new watch to my iphone 11, and I have tried resetting the fitness calibration data as well, but still NO DATA. Several times over the past few weeks, I have started my outdoor exercises as “outdoor walking” and ensured that I performed that exercise for several minutes more than 20 minutes, then ended the workout, waited a few minutes, and started a new workout as “outdoor running”, and performed that exercise for well more than 20 minutes before ending it. All of the data recorded for these exercise sessions looks good (good, solid HR recordings, active calories, course mapping, etc.), but still NO DATA for Cardio Fitness.

In summary, I am performing exercises on a regular basis that meat the requirements for recording Cardio Fitness data, and I have had two different Apple Watches capable of recording Cardio Fitness data, but in all that time only ONE data point has ever been recorded (December 5th 2019). And the workout that resulted in that single data point is not significantly different from any of the other workouts (December 5th 2019: Outdoor Run, 32 minutes long, 2.6 miles, 244 active calories, 12’24” average pace, 118 bpm max heart rate, and 92 bpm average heart rate).

So, what am I doing wrong?
