Cardio Fitness doesn't have Apple Watch as a data source

I update my iphone and apple watch yesterday. But the cardio fitness says no data. When I checked I noticed that it does not have any datasources. My Apple Watch was not added automatically. I cannot find a way to add it manually as well. What can be done?

I thought of unpairing and pairing again. But then it will not have my previous data right?

I have done EVERYTHING. Paring, unpairing. Brisk 20 minute outdoor walk. Monkeying with data sources. An hour on the phone with Apple where they tried everything. In the end, I simply show no cardio fitness data. And two Apple technicians didn’t even know about the "new" cardio fitness feature. This has driven me mad. If anyone has some magic bullet I haven’t tried please let me and Apple know. I have the Apple Watch 6, the iPhone 12 Pro Max. This is crazy.

Well, my husband finally got data to show up in cardio fitness. He did 5 ourdoor walks, all under two miles each, average pace 20/mph, half of it through the woods, so uneven. My next move will be to do the same and see if that fixes things for me. It's absurd for Apple to make the requirement to be a 20 minute run at 10 mph. We are in our 70's and very active and fit, but running stopped a long time ago when knees said ENOUGH. I do a lot of core and strength training now, plus walking/hiking. For "" to have any value at all, it needs to measure more than a 10 mph run.

Apple has already said that high intensity workouts are NOT a requirement for Cardio Fitness data and my data started showing up with far less intense activity. I think it is much more likely that it simply takes a period of time before the data starts showing up and that whatever activity was done was simply coincidental,.

"However, Apple made a change recently in the iOS. Now for it to record Vo2 Max you have to run for 20 minutes at 10 mph."

That is not Apple's official position nor is it true. I have had cardio fitness data show up with far less intense activity than that. It's simply takes a while for the data to show up but people are mistaking whatever they did at that point in time as a requirement. Apple has made a big point that the update actually REDUCED the amount of activity required not increased it.

I'm having the same problem with the Health cardio fit NO DATA.....and my iphone 11 +iwatch 6...so with what I've read, it takes up to. or more than 24 hours for the data to appear or sync .....so does this mean that the info goes to apple servers to be computed?..why can't the apple watch do it immediately?

Roughly how long after doing the work did it show up? I’ve tried everything - resetting calibration data, going for a walk with maps on. EVERYTHING, but still can’t get it to work. I’ve been on multiple walks over 20 mins with a decent pace but still no data. Also in the cardio fitness my watch doesn’t even show up as an available source

unless you both have exactly the same activity patterns, there may very well may be a reason. It took my new watch about seven days before the data started showing up so I would give it a little while longer before you conclude there is an issue. I suspect there is some kind of baseline that is needed before the first computation is made.

"More" may not be the relevant variable here although it's hard to say without knowing the algorithm that Apple is using. It's been my impression on this thread that everybody who says the data isn't showing up has it show up after a period of time although they attribute this to a whole series of different things. The only thing constant here seems to be time.

The only thing I'm really sure of is that the watch won't show up as a data source until it writes the first data. The part about it taking time is just a theory but that was my experience. I actually had to re-pair the watch and the second time it also took some days which supports the theory.

Anyway, I hope I'm right and you get your data soon. Let me know because I will be curious.

I am glad that Cardio Fitness magically started working for some people, but it still isn’t working for me. I started using my new Series 5 watch (always running the latest IOS) in November of 2019 with lots of outdoor walks and outdoor runs using the Workout app, all of which have been longer than 20 minutes. I got exactly ONE VO2Max data point recorded (December 5th, 2019) out of literally hundreds of qualifying workouts. I upgraded to a Series 6 watch (always running the latest IOS) in November 2020 and still have not had any new Cardio Fitness data recorded. In desperation I deleted that one data point from December 2019, hoping that would prompt a new data point, but nothing. In fact, when I check the Health App and Cardio Fitness, there is NOTHING listed as a data source for this feature. I have tried re-pairing the watch as a new watch to my iphone 11, and I have tried resetting the fitness calibration data as well, but still NO DATA. Several times over the past few weeks, I have started my outdoor exercises as “outdoor walking” and ensured that I performed that exercise for several minutes more than 20 minutes, then ended the workout, waited a few minutes, and started a new workout as “outdoor running”, and performed that exercise for well more than 20 minutes before ending it. All of the data recorded for these exercise sessions looks good (good, solid HR recordings, active calories, course mapping, etc.), but still NO DATA for Cardio Fitness.

In summary, I am performing exercises on a regular basis that meat the requirements for recording Cardio Fitness data, and I have had two different Apple Watches capable of recording Cardio Fitness data, but in all that time only ONE data point has ever been recorded (December 5th 2019). And the workout that resulted in that single data point is not significantly different from any of the other workouts (December 5th 2019: Outdoor Run, 32 minutes long, 2.6 miles, 244 active calories, 12’24” average pace, 118 bpm max heart rate, and 92 bpm average heart rate).

So, what am I doing wrong?

First of all, I'm not sure what you mean by "magically started working." What exactly is the difference between magically started and just started? Anyway, what you are describing is not what most people are asking about here which is why the cardio fitness data is not showing up with their new Watch whereas you have had two watches with almost no data.

The first thing that comes to mind is that the workout you describe is pretty low intensity particularly if you are a relatively young person. I doubt that a heart rate average of 92 would have triggered any VO2 Max readings under the old system So if all your workouts were at that intensity level I'm not surprised you had no data. However, with the latest iOS version, the intensity levels are much less demanding so I assume you should have data by now.

Before going any further it would be helpful to know if it's true that your exercise intensity levels were consistently so low because that would mean there was no reason to think your older watch was defective and we can focus on the new one.
