iPod battery drain

Just bought the latest generation iPod Touch a couple weeks ago. Fully charged it, downloaded my music library, stuck it in the drawer. A couple days later I went to lookup a song on it and the battery was down to %50. Put it back in the drawer and days later I went to used it and the battery was dead. What would cause the battery to drain when not in use?
