iPod shuffle gen 4 shows free space but I can't add songs

I have two gen 4 ipod shuffles and they are both doing the same thing. They show over 40MB free space, but when I go to add a song, a warning pops up saying there is not enough free space available. My old gen3 ipod didn't have that issue. I could fill it to the brim! By the way, all I have on both shuffles is music, nothing else.

FYI, I have "manually manage music" enabled, and "convert higher bitrate songs to 128" enabled. I just did a restore/clean install. Same issue. My itunes version is 12.5.5.5. I haven't updated it in a while I know, but I can't imagine this being the issue? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!!!

Hello Bdrums1971,

Thank you for confirming the size of the songs you're seeking to download. If you delete an existing song, then add the desired song does that all the new song to sync properly? If so, and with two iPod Shuffle (4th generation) having the issue that would indicate that this is expected behavior. Especially with having restored the iPods as a troubleshooting step.

Take care!

Hello Bdrums1971,

The additional details greatly help. With being able to remove, and add a new song to the iPod shuffle that would indicate the message is appearing properly, and that the iPod Shuffles would need additional space to add more songs.

You could reach out to Apple directly for additional assistance, but do keep in mind the iPod Shuffle (4th generation) does fall within the obsolete product range. Hardware components are no longer manufactured by Apple, and support my be limited. This information can be found in the following article.

Hello Bdrums1971,

It sounds as though you're being prompted that there's not enough available space to add additional music to your iPod shuffles. With content appearing on the iPod as expected, the new content you're wanting to sync can likely be exceeding the available space and require additional space.

Thanks for the reply. I have my ipods set to manually manage music, so they don't really sync once I put the mp3 files on there. But as for your question, if I delete an existing song from my shuffle, then add another song, yes it will allow me to add the new song. But not any more than just that one (and it gives me the message that not enough free space is available.)

In the bar graph at the bottom of the ipod shuffle summary (in itunes) it shows over 40 MB of free space still available. So I SHOULD be able to add at least a few more songs. I never had this issue with my Gen 3 shuffle.

Do your shuffles have the same issue? Is there free space showing in the bar graph, but you can't add anymore songs? I can't imagine this is how the shuffle is supposed to work (showing free space, but not being able to add more songs).
