Big Sur folder icon

I upgraded to Big Sur and for the first time ever I am despising Apple and thinking it's barely better than Windows. One small hopefully solvable problem - I have folder aliases on my desktop and had customized icons for all of them. They all disappeared after the upgrade. I have one by one customized the icon for each folder TWICE now because they disappear. I did one row a third time and they have disappeared. Is this a Big Sur glitch that will be fixed or is there some sorcery necessary?

Honestly, I own stock and am grateful for the value from that, but if Big Sur were my first OS experience I would never have bought a Mac.

This does not address my issue. Notice I said I had already customized my folder icons, which means I know how to do it. What happened is all the customized icons on folder aliases on my desktop disappeared after downgrading to Big Sur. I put custom icons back in the two dozen or so aliases. They disappeared again. I put them all back once again. They disappeared again. Fix that. Stop it from happening.
