iPhone 12 Pro: bluetooth connection to BMW breaks

Dear community,

after upgrading from my Xs to a 12 Pro this November, I started experiencing strange bluetooth issues with my 2009 BMW 3 Series. The connection would always break, either in the beginning or at the end of a phone call.

Talking to BMW support, I was advised that they didn't plan on releasing bug fixes for this model anymore. They even went as far as saying the issues could arise from the old bluetooth protocol used in the car.

Since the connection has always been flawless with my Xs, I wanted to ask if somebody has seen similar issues.

Now, I am hoping that there could be a setting that I've missed, or that Apple would be so kind to increase their backward compatibility, if more people have those problems. Is the bug reporting tool the right place to go with this?

Dear Fabi,

I’ve got a 2008 BMW that has an early generation iDrive without HDD. Over the years I had upgraded my iPhone from 3GS to 4S to 5S to 6S to X to XS without any Bluetooth issues. And then once I’ve upgraded to 12pro, connection was pretty much hit and miss.

It will connect sometimes but other times not. It’ll be working fine for a while and then drop out and then after a few minutes it’ll reconnect again. There’s no consistency to isolate when or what affects the success of connection.

I’ve tried everything from removing device / unpairing on both ends, turning Bluetooth off and on, turning phone and car off and on. Same outcome and it will just work intermittently. I’ve been updating to the latest iOS whenever it’s released but it makes no difference.

Very frustrating to say the least.

Side note: Bluetooth works flawlessly (so far) in my wife’s 2014 BMW which has an iDrive that is a few generations newer.
