Midi not working properly on M1 MacBook Pro

Hi everyone,

I'm hoping someone can help here.

Firstly my hardware is M1 MacBook Pro (1TB/16GB) and an Allen & Heath Xone:K2. The K2 doesn't need drivers and A&H say it is compatible with Mac OS 11 anyway.

When I connect the K2 it is detected and registers both the audio interface and the midi device to the system and they both appear in the Audio Midi Setup utility.

This is where things go wonky. The audio interface works as expected but the midi device part, despite showing as registered, does not send any midi signals. When ‘Test Setup” is on there is no response at all. Additionally Traktor and Logic can’t see the device or find its port.

When I view the device properties from the midi studio window it does appear like the device isn’t connected even though it is.

Midi on the Mac is working as my Korg midi keyboard is detected and works as expected.

The K2 itself works fine when I connect it to my old MacBook, so I know it still works, just not on the new Mac.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Thank you in advance.

MacBook Pro 13″, macOS 11.1

I have a 16GB MBP M1 as well. I bought it less than a week ago.

There seems to be an M1 chip issue (not Big Sur) that's been reported many times on various support boards. The "stock" answer by Apple is to either use bluetooth midi or to try to get it running via audio/midi setup via a cable. I've heard that bluetooth midi is working with the MBP/M1, but didn't want to buy a wireless midi keyboard to fix a problem that shouldn't exist. It's a shame that six months after product launch Apple still hasn't fixed the very well documented midi issues with the new M1 chip.

Here is a solution: iConnectivity mioXC. It's a simple midi cable with a USB C (and USB A converter) on one end and a pair of DIN midi connections on the other. Perhaps the USB output on the keyboard is confusing the MBP and it can't sort audio from midi data - I'm not an engineer, so can't say for sure. When you use the DIN (round) midi connector, it's midi only - no audio.

Neither my M-Audio Ozone, nor my Yamaha MOX8 were working with my M1 laptop and I tried going deep into the audio/midi setup, and used a midi monitoring program called snoize. I saw on another board that someone had tried this simple midi cable and it worked, so I took the chance (it's about $50).

My Apogee Duet works for audio, but the USB midi - nada. So I plug my Ozone midi controller into the mioXC and it even works through a hub using the USB C to USB A adapter. No muss, no fuss and I'm operational.

I can't imagine if the guys with big midi rigs requiring multiple midi ports will ever be running on this chip, but if you just have a single or 2 midi input devices, this could work for you.

Good luck!

Thanks for the input everyone.

I too was hoping the 11.2 update would fix it. I have reported the to apple via the feedback form and to tech support.

I've console too, I can see the connection but I get the same error as sinm pointed out.

I spent 2 months scouring support forums for anything that might help and come up with nothing other than more devices that aren't working. I asked A&H for an update but they've yet to get back to me, its been a week so I'm not holding my breath.

So off the back of that I've just bought a Native instruments X1, which according to NI is compatible with both Big Sur and M1 Macs.

I'll report back when it's arrived.

The incompatibility discussed here is not about the controller, but the interface. Clearly some interfaces don't work with M1 (MOTU), some are being upgraded so that they will (see above). and some were of such a design that this was never an issue (MIO). My 20-year old Yamaha kb works fine with the right interface. However, I also have an ancient MIDIMan controller that is no longer supported and I have been unable to find drivers that will get it working on any interface. Seems to me that if you mean "obsolete" rather than "incompatible," you might have the same issue. Otherwise, try one of these interfaces that are reported to be working with M1/Big Sur.

Update of my history.

Moog answered me. Their answer, as Waldorf 's answer, was "USB is a fixed protocol and therefore independent of the system (Windows/Mac) or operating system OS".

It seems pretty clear to me that it is an Apple issue.

All those devices that use only a simple midi protocol and do not need drivers must be recognized by the computer.

I hope first of all Apple admits that there is an issue with a usb ports and then tell us if they are looking to solve it.

It’s obvious that M1 has some midi issues. Most gear manufacturers offer the same answer (their products are class compliant and there’s not much they can do about it). Strangely enough some gear works though (Native Instruments, for example).

We need to make this escalate

so that Apple takes the issue seriously. As more and more people switch to M1 based machines, this will be unavoidable. However, I’m still wondering how it could be that this MIDI limitation still is not headline news.

FIXED! I got the iConnectivity mioXC and now my M1 MBP is receiving midi!!!! Both my M-Audio Ozone and my Yamaha MOX8 are working with all my DAW apps: Logic Pro X, Protools, and Studio One! (I haven't tried GB yet as I don't really use it, but if Logic Pro X works, I'm sure GB will work as well).

I don't know what's different about it - perhaps because it's midi only (no audio), that makes a difference.

Highly recommended! It may be the best $50 I've spent in a while.

Now onto music creation!!!!

Yup,

I bought a MacBook Pro M1 specifically for gigging....it’s basically a friggin brick. Midi interfaces don’t work. Gig performer has audio handling issues, can use BandHelper.

Apple made a mess out of this yet again....hardware before developer inclusion and software compatibility..

irresponsible. Where is the next Jobs because clearly the care for customers take a back seat to profit, innovation and expanding the brand in a responsible manner.

apple.....do better...you owe it to us. NO EXCUSES.

I just bought a MBP M1 on Saturday and am also having problems getting either of my 2 Midi keyboards recognized. I have an M-Audio Ozone and a Yamaha MOX8. They both worked just fine via USB on my old MacPro, but nada on the M1. I tried both direct USB and via my Apogee Duet (which works for audio just fine).

I just ordered the iConnectivity mioXC and should get it tomorrow or the next day. I'll post if it solves the issue. Otherwise, I may just return my new computer (that I just spent about 12 hours downloading apps and stuff. It's just so hard to believe that six months in on a new product and they don't have something so basic like midi fixed yet - on a computer used by musicians all over the world. :(
