I imported video from a SONY camcorder into iMovie (9.0.4 running on El Capitan 10.11.6), and it created Events with a .dv suffix, stored on an external drive. When I open the drive on a different Macbook, with iMovie 10.2.2 in Catalina 10.15.7, I get the message "unsupported file type". How can I convert them?

Try converting your troublesome clips to H.264, Mp4/AAC with the free download, Handbrake. Do that even if the codec already is indicated to be Mp4/AAC. Re-rendering often cures the issue.
You can get Handbrake here:
A simple way to do it is to open Handbrake and do a File/Open Source. Navigate to your video and choose it as the source from
the resulting screen. Then do File/Start Encoding. Wait a couple of minutes for the conversion to complete. Then save and import the converted clip into iMovie.
EDIT: Always safest to work with duplicates so that you keep your originals.
