Brother wi-fi printer offline with Mojave

I was having problems with my Brother HL-L2390DW printer showing up as offline when trying to print via WiFi. I installed it originally with a USB, following the instructions that came with the printer by downloading the drivers for Mojave 10.14. It went through the wireless setup wizard and got my network name and password, but then would show up offline when I disconnected the USB.

I reset the printer settings on my Mac, deleted/uninstalled all the Brother software/drivers, and set up using WiFi and AirPrint, using these instructions as a guide: https://support.apple.com/en-euro/guide/mac-help/mh14004/10.14/mac/10.14

No drivers are needed since both this printer and my Mac have AirPrint.

Here are the steps that worked for me after resetting the printer settings:

  1. Manually add wireless password to the printer via the printer's menu. Leave it turned on so your Mac can find it.
  2. Open Printers & Scanners in Mac settings.
  3. Click + Button to add nearby printer.

I turned the printer off and back on to make sure it didn't show up as offline again. It took five seconds for it to show up as online, but it worked.
