Hi airbarerra,

Sounds like you need to select Bluetooth Headset to automatically be selected to receive the audio from calls when when you are actively using your AirPods.

I have an iPhone 11, I go to

Settings->Accessibility->Touch->Call Audio Routing and then select from, AUTOMATIC, BLUETOOTH or SPEAKER. Hope this helps you.

Troubleshooting this Connection:

It probably keeps losing the signal due to earwax, making it just fall out. That is a typical reason for using the connection.

A Few Thoughts:

A. Visit Apple Support links:

B. Verify the Balance:

  1. Go to: Settings
  2. Tap: General
  3. Tap: Accessibility
  4. Scroll Down: to Hearing
  5. Adjust: the audio volume balance

D. Perform a Hard Restart of the iPhone:

  1. Deselect: all of these apps (so that they are "grey" in color)
  2. Tap: General
  3. Tap: Shut Down (very bottom).
  4. Swipe: Line to the Right
  5. Wait: 30 Seconds
  6. Power Back Up
