Delete a message on my MacBook air

Since upgrading to Big Sur I can’t delete my messages. I see in the comments about right clicking but I am not a techie and when I right click on my bottom square nothing happens. Please help a tech dummy with specifics

Try to delete messages in the Application Messages or talking about e-mail messages. If in Messages >> click on the message and notice an almost invisible x beside the clicked message. Click the x and puff it is gone.
