Finder windows

Is there a way of stacking finder windows like safari stacks open web pages with tabs at the top? When I am using several documents and spreadsheets etc and keep looking for other files I end up with a large number of opened finder windows in the background which are hidden behind the windows I am using and not easy to access. I would like to keep some of the windows open to enable selection of files from folders in the finder windows.

Sure. Finder has had tabs for a few years now.

You can use command-T to open a new tab in the same window.

And you can set the preferences to open folders in new tabs vs new windows by default.

Look at the Finder Window menu to observe the keyboard shortcuts for navigating between its tabs.
