Canon TR8520 cannot scan after update to MacOS 11.1

When attempt to Open Scanner from Printers & Scanners get error message: "Failed to open a connection to the device (-21345)". When I connect printer to Mac via USB cable and attempt to Open Scanner, the scanner will scan the tray a single time. Canon says I am up to date on driver/software/firmware.


My computer is a 2 month old iMac 2020.


Any suggestions to get my scanner back?

Your Canon TR8520 device is supported by Apple's built-in AirPrint when networked (wired/wireless). Don't need Canon software or drivers either.


With the device powered on and networked, visit System Preferences : Printers & Scanners panel. Right-click on your Printer entry, and choose Reset printing system… . In the re-add panel, choose AirPrint instead of the normal Canon drivers, and re-add the device. Click on your printer entry, and there should be a means to access the scanning component from the Printers & Scanners panel.

Thank you so much for your prompt reply and suggestions. Unfortunately, I changed to both "Secure AirPrint" and "AirPrint" but when I clicked on Open Scanner get same error message in both cases..


FWIW: Printer did not work at first, but after turning off then on 3 or 4 times, the printer was recognized and worked at least printing pages and pdf documents. I noticed that when I clicked on your link to Air Print the article only mentioned Printing and did not mention scanning - is that a difference so it might work for printing and not for scanning?

As far as I know, if the device has a scanning component, and the AirPrint support for it provides a scanning component, then it should work. Alternatively, try Apple's Image Capture included with the operating system. If that does not work, you might consider the paid VueScan Professional product that supports the scanning component of the TR8520 without any Canon software or drivers necessary. VueScan is a free trial (probably with some features disabled), and is very comprehensive.


I have owned VueScan Professional since 2010, and without vendor compensation of any kind, I can recommend it. In ten years, I have never had to pay an upgrade fee to the current version.

Wow I must be doing something wrong. I installed VueScan (free version) and there is a watermark across a very grainy, low quality scan. A pop up says this watermark is permanent and can only be removed by purchase of Pro version.


I hate to purchase the Pro version only to learn that the quality of the scan stays the same. I also see that VueScan has a feature to remove dots from scans of magazine pages. Are you satisfied with the quality of scans from VueScan? Also is there a way to not have to open VueScan so use becomes automatic, or do you have to open for every use?


The cost of the Pro version is almost half of what I paid for the printer (on sale). From what I have read online (and I have spent more than six hours researching this problem) the problem is not just Canon, but HP, Brother and others. Sounds like an Apple problem although Apple says its not.

Hi fuzzymo -

Thank you for your reply. I hoped I had made a mistake because I had already installed some version of the Scan Utility Lite and it didn't work. So I looked and sure enough I had downloaded version 3.3.0 which is supposed to support Big Sur.


I would attach a screenshot but I don't know how.


it shows the version date from About, the search for scanners and the error message which suggests several possibilities. My printer is on my wi-fi and the IJ Canon Network Device Utility says I have a 100% connection and I have tried with the printer connected to Mac with USB cable. No one else on my network is attempting to use the scanner.
