I upgraded to AppleTV about a year ago but still have the original AppleTV unit. Can I upgrade the old, first generation unit or trade it in?

There is no trade-in for Apple TV boxes. Apple Trade In - Apple

You can re-sell it yourself, or have it recycled responsibly through Apple or your local certified electronics recycler.
