Can I use the hdmi port for an external monitor and the USB-C port for an external harddrive at the same time?

I have a Macbook Pro which as you all know only has 2 ports. I want to be able to us my external monitor and my external hard drive at the same time while charging my laptop. How can I do that? When I tried using the USB-C port while the HDMI port is being used on my USB-C to Digital AV the hard drive would not turn on. Any suggestion?

You should be able to. My wife can with her MBP. However, your external drive may be putting too much of a drain on your power and if you have the option you may wish to put it on a powered hub or its own power supply.
