Live Photos and Mac via AirDrop

I moved a group of Live Photos over from my iPhone 12 to my MacBook Pro M1 using AirDrop. I then imported them into Photos but they lost their "Live" behavior. Sending the same group of images to myself in an iMessage allowed me to open them up in Photos without losing the video component...they were still "Live" photos

Is there an issue with Air Drop?

Hi there, Donovan!

Congratulations on your new MacBook Pro. We understand that after using AirDrop to transfer some Live photos from your iPhone, the "Live" capability does not appear to be working on the Mac. We'd be happy to help!

Since the Live photos transfer without issue using iMessage, we know the function itself is working. To troubleshoot why it isn't working with AirDrop transfers, we recommend the following steps:

  1. Make sure your Mac has the latest macOS version (which currently is macOS 11.1): How to update the software on your Mac - Apple Support
  2. Make sure your iPhone has the latest iOS version it supports: Update your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support.
  3. Try transferring the pictures via AirDrop while the computer is in safe mode: Start up your Mac in safe mode - Apple Support. If it does not occur in safe mode, restart the computer normally and try again.

If it does continue in safe mode, or after testing in safe mode it returns, don't hesitate to respond back.

Best!
