I have an iPhone 8 and it charges wirelessly just fine. Did you verify in the settings that it IS an iPhone 8?
If it's never wirelessly charged, I would assume it's a hardware issue.

Yes, it is a Qi charger. My iPhone 12 charges on it with no problem. It’s my wife’s iPhone 8 that won’t charge. Inferring from the question that iPhone 8s are not necessarily Qi enabled, is that right?
Yes, definitely an iPhone 8. Has never charged on a wireless charger before.
There may be a placement issue between the charger and the phone. I had to try with about 8 different models of chargers before my i8+ would finally ‘latch’ and charge, since I wanted a stand-type charger and not a puck. The placement of the coils is critical; more than ~3% offcenter and it won’t work. If there’s a known-good puck-type charger handy, can try fiddling around just to confirm it doesn’t work in any position and the phone is faulty.
