I noticed a song of mine (3:24) took up 8 MB and wondered at what bitrate it was downloaded and whether it was closer to 320 Kbps than 256. At 256 Kbps, wouldn’t it be closer to 7 MB than 8?

Yes, all songs sold as downloads in the iTunes Store are at 256 kbps, which takes about 2 MB per minute of music. There can be additional bytes in the file for artwork.

In my library, Purchased tracks with duration from 3:22 to 3:26 (within 2 seconds of yours) have size ranging from 7.2 MB to 7.7 MB. Your 8 MB is a little on the high side but not by much.
