Touch ID not working after macOS 11.1 update

I am using a MacBook Pro 13" (2019, 2,4GHz 4-core i5, 4 TB3) and unlocking with Touch ID will not work after turning it back on from Sleep mode. Everything else that requires Touch ID is working as expected.

The problem started after updating to Big Sur 11.1 yesterday (until 11.0.1 it was working correctly).

The overall unlock is slow, it will take a few seconds for the computer to open after clicking enter.

Thank you for your advice. I do not use Little Snitch but I came up with the idea that some application close to OS can cause the issue thanks to your comment.

I tried to uninstall some components (Packet Filter and DART) of VPN software, Cisco AnyConnect and restarted my Mac. Then the issue has been resolved. It is really weird why application can affect the Apple's security facilities...

Your situation is exactly the same as mine - it will only work on Safe Mode, SMC and PRAM reset do nothing, resetting fingerprints and adding a new user don’t help too, 11.2 doesn't fix it...

Do you use Little Snitch on your Mac? Yesterday I uninstalled it and after restarting, it was back to normal. In my case I think that might have been the problem, but I’ll keep an eye on it and update the thread if something happens.

P.S.: one thing I noticed is that Find My Mac is also disabled when Touch ID is not working

Hello jpgns_05,

Welcome to Apple Support Communities. It looks like you're unable to wake your Mac from sleep using Touch ID after updating to macOS 11.1. We understand the importance of having this feature working as expected, and we'd like to help.

To get started, let's try to reset SMC on your Mac:

How to reset the SMC of your Mac

We hope this information is useful. Kind regards.

I have the same issue on my MacBook Pro 2019 13 inch. after I updated from Catalina to Big Sur 11.2 on Feb 5. None of the following have not worked. Anyone solved this issue by some other solutions?

One weird thing is I can unlock the screen lock by Touch ID only when I am on Safe Mode (There is arrow and text of "unlock with Touch ID" in the Touch Bar and Touch ID works to unlock) but then restart the Mac in normal mode, I can not unlock it again. (When Mac displays locked screen, there is no arrow and text of "unlock with Touch ID" in the Touch Bar.)

  • Resetting the SMC (I tried several times of both 10 sec. pushing and 7 sec.pushing Ctlr + option + shift then + 7sec. pushing of power button)
  • Resetting PRAM
  • Entering Safe Mode and then restart in Normal Mode.
  • Deleting all fingerprints and after restart, adding them again.
  • Re-installing OS
  • Resetting Password
  • Adding new user

Two things. Try starting in Safe Mode ( shift ) key at startup. It will do a Repair Disk, clear cache files and only load Apple Software needed to operate the computer. Will load slowly - Normal. Let it run this way for 5 - 7 minutes and the restart in Normal Mode.

Have found, once up and running, if computer is put to sleep for a length of time ( ?? how long) and open lid it will present with login requirements but will require password as opposed to Fingerprint to log back in. Balance of Fingerprint unlocking other aspects will function as previous outlined.
