re: "message" in iCloud storage
In my iCloud storage, messages takes up 2.4GB of storage. My problem is I do not have messages toggled to back up to iCloud. What "messages" could this be?

Try going to Settings > Name > iCloud > Manage Storage > Messages > Disable & Delete to see if it'll take care of that.

YES ! that worked for me! I have been trying to free up old backup data for about an hour or two. Thank you !!
But ... now that the messages are gone, I should be able to turn the Messages back on to back up, and yet they all come back when I do. So obviously iCloud is retaining the messages that I just disabled and deleted.
I have literally deleted from the device ALL of my messages prior to any of the above steps
Thanks so much! That did free up my iCloud space. Strange part was I didn’t have my messages set up to be sent to the cloud (& they were not), however messages were in the cloud storage. Oh well fixed now!

You're most welcome.
