LG Ultrafine 5K M1 Mac spurious vertical shift in a 2 inch band on screen

I recently got a M1 Mac Mini, and have been using it with my 2019 LG Ultrafine 5K display (made in ¡Mexico!). Previously I used it with my Intel-based MacBook Pro with no problem at all, though there is one problem that I keep on hitting with my new M1 Mac. At times during boot somehow it creates a permanent vertical band in which every pixel is shifted from its position by a few points in Y-direction. It happens randomly, and unless I reboot my computer the effect doesn't go away. The vertical band appears around center of screen. Interestingly, if I take screenshot or record a QuickTime video when the problem appears, it does not seem to appear after reboot. So the problem is not recordable using built in screen recording applications. I will take a picture from my phone camera next time around for the Apple team, I wonder if anyone else in the community has had similar problem? I have done my part by filing the bug to Apple, but have received no response.

Hi Ross,

I can confirm that using the USB-C cable seems to avoid the problem.

I have an M1 Mac mini and a LG UltraFine 5K monitor that was purchased in November (so presumably it's the latest incarnation). It came with two cables:

  • Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C) with white lightning bolt symbols at each end
  • USB-C cable

I've also tried a USB-C cable purchased at a local store. Here's what I've found:

  • The LG provided Thunderbolt 3 cable sometimes shows the vertical band of shifted pixels. The problem can be induced or fixed by sleeping the monitor via a hot corner, though it might take a few tries.
  • The LG provided USB-C cable does not show the problem. I slept the monitor and canceled logins to get a black screen a couple of dozen times and could not reproduce it.
  • The "store bought" USB-C cable does not work at all. It does not drive the monitor - the monitor stays black. That avoids the problem but it's a poor solution. ;-)

As you've pointed out, the sacrifice with the LG provided USB-C cable is that one maxes out at 4K (3840 x 2160).

I'm going to call Apple again to see where they're at with this.

I have a new MB Pro with MI chip and a new LG Ultrafine 27 5K display I bought from Apple site. I have the exact same problem with the vertical stripe. I also tried a new Thunderbolt cable, but that made NO difference. My monitor came with a thunderbolt cable and usb c cable. I'll give that a try to see if it fixed the problem.

But still, this problem should be fixed.

Thanks! Just wonder if the thunderbolt pro cable can solve this?

Definitely not, that's what I've been using since day one with my M1 Mac mini and the LG Ultra Fine 5k and I get the same issue. I don't accept the solution of downgrading to a max of 4k, otherwise I would have bought a 4k monitor, so I'm still looking for a resolution. I can deal with disconnecting/reconnecting the monitor sporadically for now.

Wish I'd seen this thread earlier, as I'm having the same issue. I purchased mine in March for my M1 Mac mini (MFRd in Dec 2020). Noticed the issue after a couple of days. A month later I reached out to LG for resolution and they set me up to send it to them for repair. I didn't want to be without a monitor, so I reached out to the Apple Store, whom I purchased it from, and they replaced it that day (also MFRd in Dec 2020). Had the same problem. Reached back out to LG and sent it to them for repair. Got it back a month later and noticed it again after a couple days. Going to try the USB-C "solution".

My problem with the LG monitor occurred with a 2019 MacPro (not MacBook or Mac mini). I was getting the vertical shift until the screen blew completely and there was no image at all. After speaking with Apple’s tech support and doing diagnostics with my laptop attached to the monitor they were able to determine that it was indeed the display and not my MacPro that was messed up (whew). I then contacted LG who told me that it was going to take weeks for a repair leaving me with NOTHING to operate my $10,000 computer with. They have no loaner program, and gave me nothing but scripted infuriating responses after hours wasted on hold with their “customer service” that did nothing but raise my blood pressure.

Luckily I originally bought the monitor through Amazon who - if nothing else - has excellent customer service. They allowed me to return the LG crap and credited me with a full refund, three months after purchase.

I bought a 4K HP monitor for 1/2 the price of the LG that’s working perfectly. I’ll wait for a suitable 5K monitor to be released by Apple (NOT the $5,000 one) or someone else then upgrade. Stay away from LG! Their 5K monitor is a piece of S*** and their customer service is even worse.

not even replacing the MLB will fix these display issues with M1 mac mini. Had mine replaced by an AASP, and the Apple-certified tech and I tested multiple display models (VGAs display via Apple multi-AV adapter, HDMIs HD, FHD, 22 in and 32 in displays, different brand and models) and the issues are replicable and are persistent even with a just newly installed MLB! the unit is still with the AASP. 1.5 months now and counting. Even in recovery mode the problem shows.

Apple won't give me a refund; the replacement MLB is also defective.

Ross, I bought my LG 5K in August 2019 and when I went digging back through the box, it does have a "USB-C" cable as well that is labeled "MacBook / iPadPro". After unplugging the Thunderbolt 3 cable and reconnecting the LG 5K to the M1 Mac Mini using this "USB-C" cable, following dre1138's suggestion I looked in under Hardware > USB in System Info and don't see the monitor there. It's still showing under Hardware > Thunderbolt > Thunderbolt Bus 0.

Is there something else I need to change to convince the monitor to use USB-C instead of Thunderbolt?

Hello,

I am currently experiencing the same problem with a misaligned column of pixels (the band on my display is about ¼" wide). However, I am working with a new MacPro not an M1 Mini. I am connected with a 6' OWC Thunderbolt 3 cable. I'm using the TH3 cable to specifically get all the resolution possible from the LG Ultrafine 5K.

Just wanted to post and let folks know that it's happening with a machine other than the M1 Mac. Please post any updates to fix this.

Thanks

So LG finally put up the LG Display Manager on the App Store and it works with Apple Silicons...well it works sort of. Meaning: it does now recognize your monitor. Display settings in the app simply open the Apple Display Preference pane. And of course it did NOT release a new version of its now almost 2 year old Firmware. Thus the display distortion issue remains.
